New Era Academy NEA is a regulated awarding body that offers graded examinations covering a broad range of Communication and Performance disciplines.

Since 1941, New Era Academy has offered a syllabus of graded examinations in a variety of communication
and performance disciplines. We are a UK based independent examinations board regulated by Ofqual in the United Kingdom and by CCEA in Northern Ireland. We provide a robust and innovative range of syllabi tiered over 4 entry levels and eight grades suitable for all learning abilities and creative potential. NEA’s Level 3 exams (grade 6-7 and 8) are eligible for UCAS points towards UK university entrance.

Congratulations to Canice from The Belfast School of Speech & Drama Est 1995 on achieving a Distinction in his New Era Academy Acting for Screen Grade 3 examination!

At just eleven years old, Canice is among the first learners to take our Acting for Screen examinations. Alongside school and acting classes, he has already secured roles in both a short film and theatre productions.

Our Acting for Screen examinations are designed to help young actors develop essential screen acting skills, from camera awareness and natural performance to reaction and self-presentation.

Screen Acting: Grades 3 → 5 → 8

As learners progress through New Era Academy Screen Acting, tasks develop from building confidence and camera awareness to creating believable characters and making thoughtful performance choices. By Grade 5, learners are developing greater control, authenticity and interpretation, while Grade 8 challenges them to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of screen acting techniques.

Each grade builds on the last, helping learners develop the skills, confidence and technical awareness needed to perform naturally and effectively on camera.

Podcasting - developing creative and technical skills!

The podcasting syllabus places equal importance on creative expression and technical competence.

Learners are expected to present original and authentic work while also demonstrating awareness of framing, lighting, sound, camera angles, editing, formatting and appropriate use of music or transitions.

This balance ensures that podcasting is understood not only as spoken communication, but also as a planned and edited screen-based media product.

Reflection is embedded throughout the syllabus grades to help learners evaluate both their performance and their production process. By considering what worked well, what was challenging and what could be improved, learners develop critical awareness and take increasing responsibility for the quality of their own work.

This autumnal poem first published in 1892 explores love, ageing, memory, regret and the difference between genuine love and love based on physical beauty.

When You Are Old provides plenty of opportunities to explore tone, pace, pauses, emphasis and emotional interpretation. The gentle, reflective language can be performed in different ways — for example, as tender and affectionate, or with a stronger sense of sadness and regret.

It also encourages them to consider how poetry can express complex feelings and connect with an audience.

Why choose Acting examinations?🎭

Acting exams develop far more than performance skills. Learners build, Imagination and creativity, Characterisation and interpretation alongside vocal and physical technique.

As learners progress through the grades, they explore different periods of theatre, develop their understanding of full plays and take on increasingly challenging performances.

With Solo, Duologue and Group exams, there’s a pathway for every learner — with UCAS points at higher grades and a Diploma pathway for those looking to progress towards a career in theatre.
