🎼 Join us for a rare performance of Parry’s Symphony No. 3 ‘English’ on Sunday 7th June at 3pm. A couple of behind the scenes rehearsal clips below!
Following on from our hugely successful debut performance at the Steyning Festival this weekend, where we played to a capacity audience, the WPO is making history in promoting the orchestral works of Hubert Parry, mainly known now as the composer of ‘Jerusalem’ and for his other choral music, including ‘I was Glad’, which has been played at every royal coronation since 1902.
Indeed, he is among the favourite composers of our very musical King Charles III, who even presented a TV documentary about Parry some years ago.
Over the next few years, the WPO will perform symphonies, overtures and incidental theatre music by a composer unjustly neglected on the concert platform, despite his considerable influence in reviving British music for the 20th century and beyond, as a teacher of Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughn Williams, John Ireland, Hamish MacCunn and many others.
There is a local connection too, as Parry lived in Rustington for almost 40 years.
His ‘English’ Symphony is filled with his characteristic gift for melody, combined with a symphonic sweep and grandeur, which we hope will inspire our audience.
Be part of something special and celebrate the achievements of this significant British composer on Sunday 7th June, along with hearing rising star pianist Eden Agranat Meged playing two superb concerto works by César Franck and Mozart.
