Worthing Larks

Worthing Larks Worthing Larks is a Morris Side based in Worthing, West Sussex. We meet every Tuesday evening throughout the year to practice.

Worthing Larks, based in Worthing, West Sussex, is a team of dedicated people who share the common interest of Morris dancing and folk tradition. We are a friendly and totally inclusive bunch who welcome anyone from complete beginners to experienced dancers and musicians, from age 13+. We dance out both locally and further afield at ‘Days of dance’. Having originally been set up as a mixed team wi

thin Sompting Village Morris in 2015, under the name of Sompting Larks, we recently became independent and as a result changed our name to Worthing Larks. As of July 2020 we are a side within our own right. We dance a mixture of Cotswold, Border and our own traditional Cotswold dances under the Broadwater Tradition. Having a well-travelled Foreman, we also perform dances from as far away as Lilongwe in Malawi. We strive to make even our most traditional dances our own.

Findon Valley Community Orchard successfully wassailed today!
A first-ever wassailing for Worthing Larks, and for the newly-planted apple trees, but hopefully the first of many.
Watch this space, as Eliza our Squire was interviewed today for the Worthing Podcast, which we will share once it becomes available.

Waes hael!
Come and join Worthing Larks at Findon Community Orchard tomorrow, BN150AY, 2pm, for our very first Wassailing event, as we bless all the brand-new, baby apple trees which were planted in 2024.
We will do some dancing in the car park and follow this up with a processional from the car park to the orchard, where a traditional wassailing ceremony will take place, led by our own Lark. Come join us - follow the noise and the lights!

Last night we had our first go at Longsword… We even made our very first lock!
Watch this space for updates as we learn our brand new tradition ready for next summer.

We are also recruiting! We practice weekly on a Tuesday evening, in Worthing. We are first and foremost a Cotswold side, with a repertoire of both traditional and our own dances, now learning Longsword as a second language, so if this is something which appeals to you please do get in touch!

We are VERY excited to announce that we are expanding our dance styles/ repertoire to now include Longsword, which is a type of traditional sword dance from the North East of England. It is a less-common tradition than Rapper sword dancing, and as such we believe this may make us the only current team in West Sussex to dance it. (We have since found out it will make us one of two, as Broadwood do it already!)

Many thanks to Martlet Morris (now sadly folded) for gifting us their longswords, and to Handsworth Traditional Sword Dancers for help with notation to get us started. Practice commences tomorrow, and we are psyched!
The goal is to have a longsword dance ready for May 1st. - Watch this space!
