Finally posting some more bits from my work experience with By.RDX and Jet van Dijk - Makeup Hair Costumes Performance for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts Maldives festive season.

Here are some of the pieces I had the opportunity to work on during the big lighting of the Christmas tree event.

The first image, pictured are some of the fabulous performers I had the chance to make some accessories for.

Helena Gullan pictured left & center
pictured right.

The challenge with these two pieces was tying them to the theme, while taking in account the style of their dresses and the difference of their performance in relation to the other performers. I really enjoyed creating these pieces to not only match the theme, but suite both of the artists' dresses and tie them together as a duo while still representing their own individuality.

In the second image, you can see a close-up for the headresses and the broach. One of the apprentices who was assisting, , helpfully acted as a model to check how the headdresses looked once completed.

With Helena's, I had a lot of fun filling out the foam with ribbon- trying to stay within the block texture while adding intriguing bits of texture with the woven ribbon for the base as well as the beads scattered throughout the headpiece and dangling in the front. The layered ribbon and candycane straws really help to further add dimension by adding some elevation to the piece. The bow on the belt just helped tie everything together, balancing out the outfit with lovely accents of colour.

Rachel's headress and broach was very simple in comparison, working better with the intricacies of the dress. The foam I used was different, less bulky and more finished as the piece was smaller. I had fun adding the decor to it, thinking of how to add some texture and height to the piece. In comparison to the headpiece, the broach was slightly more difficult, as the bobbles where difficult to attach and their shape was odd enough to cause some gaps. But we were able to problem solve and add some fake candy to fill in the spaces.

Outside of making accessories, which is always a favorite for me, I had the chance to gain some more expeirence with learning how to fill a space (production design).

For the third image, pictured is the festive concierge table I had the chance to decorate with items provided. I had a lot of fun thinking up ways to make it more interesting for the children visiting, adding the hanging ice cream underneath the table for smaller children to have something to look at. It was also a lot of fun to think up characters for the gingerbread bottles, making a sundress for one and a chef's outfit for another. Ribbon was my best friend for this.

In the forth image, I adjusted one of the garlands we bought as it didn't look very nice. Getting rid of the excentric bow in the original, I replaced it with some red sparkly foam as a background- adding whichever bits I took off as well as adding some fake candy scattered around. I also added my own more contained bow at the bottom, allowing it to hang more naturally. From this sample piece, one of the assistants was able to make reference when making duplicates.

The fifth image shows some decorative stars we scattered around. We wound light around them, adding ribbon for decoration, securing them with zip ties and stableguns. I had a lot of fun thinking up creative ways to wrap the stars along with the other assistants. We ended up wrapping up one like a candy cane and the other two like presents.

For the sixth image, pictured is the topper I had the pleasure of making since the topper ordered didn't arrive in time. With the help of the other assistants, we secured the foam and wire lollypops onto the tree with zip ties before tying the bow around them.

In the final image, I've included some decorations we put together for one of the first evenings, the Manager's drinks, before the lighting of the Christmas tree event. Pictured are some lovely flower arrangements I got to have fun twisting about to look for visually intriguing. We also added lights to some large paper flowers.

The Whole Picture - 1770s Menswear
Based on Sarastro from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "The Magic Flute"

For my design, I worked from 4 illustrations I drew as each of them had aspects I wanted to incorporate on my final construction. The base model design was the first design. It best exhibited the character of Sarastro and how I wanted to depict them. The second drawing was looking further at the detail and placement of the decoration. The last two drawings finalised some of the technicalities I wanted with the decoration, depicted a better representation of the hat design and length of the costume.

When designing for Sarastro's character, I looked into masonry- especially during the time period, since Mozart was a Freemason and aspects of that are visible within the opera. In addition to that, I looked into Egyptian mythology and Nepolian. Nepolian's conquests at the time brought about a huge interest in Egypt. However, there was a lot of the mythology and stories that were misunderstood or confused. Sarastro is the Priest of Isis and Osiris, in charge of the temple of the Sun- but the gods in Egyptian mythology associated with the sun are Ra, not Isis and Osiris.

As part of the project brief, I learned how to mold and cast our own buttons out of resin, create structural decoration based on Georgian archetecture from latex and expanding foam, and learn some basic millinery skills using a hatform, buckram, and millinery wire.

Reimagined: A Gallery of Theatre Through the Ages
A Collaborative Project

Here are some cinemographic looking photographs I wanted to share separately.

This is a proposal for an interactive exhibition inspired by the photographic style of Tim Walker & Igner Prader. Our aim is to create a series of photographs, capturing and telling the story of different characters from historically set theatre productions (e.g. Shakespeare's’ Caliban from the Tempest or Mozart’s Sarastro from the Magic Flute), displayed alongside a replica set from the photographs that the audience are able to interact with and walk through.

These photographs would be displayed in a room specifically designed for said character, with the photograph of the model displayed along with a wax mannequin dressed, made-up and styled to reflect the character presented in the photograph. Visitors would be able to walk through each of the rooms, re dressed from the photoshoot set and pose with the wax models in the decorated rooms. Set pieces used in the photo shoot would be from previous theatrical performances, upcycled/reused props or household objects.

This would act as an educational exhibit- sharing work from previous theatrical performances as well as a glimpse into the history of fashion through costume and hair & makeup. This exhibit would appeal to museums and art exhibition spaces, aimed for those interested in the theatre arts and art history, an interactive exhibition for anyone of any age.

"Laugh's After Dark"
A Collaborative Project

Some behind the scenes footage of Sarastro showing off his moves!

Created as a proposal for a collaborative project between costume and hair & makeup for our previous construction project "The Whole Picture" inspired by the Magic Flute.

Costumes were based on the characters of Tamino, Papageno and Sarastro (left to right) from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "The Magic Flute". As part of the project brief, we learned how to mold and cast our own buttons out of resin, create structural decoration based on Georgian archetecture from latex and expanding foam, and learn some basic millinery skills using a hatform, buckram, and millinery wire.

This project featuring three 18th Century characters, who by day, live as mannequins in a costume museum, and by night, come to life and leave the museum to perform stand up comedy. This creates a performance what encompases an absurd and unexpected juxtaposition of 18th century observational comedy within a 21st century context.
