Jessie McMeekin Storytelling

Jessie McMeekin Storytelling I'm a storyteller based in Cumbria. Storytelling is the art of telling stories from memory, not read from books. It's spellbinding and technology-free.

It's part of an ancient oral tradition where stories were handed down from generation to generation.

A lovely time storytelling at the festival today, got to catch up with lots of people. I was telling some of the West Cumbrian stories I've been researching and had some brilliant conversations with locals about new stories to look up - that of Tom Hurd's Rock, and Goosey Tyson's cave. Huge congratulations to Rosehill Theatre and everyone involved in the event for making it happen! Thanks also to for the photo!!

Today I saw part of the wonderful Aesthetica Art Prize 20 exhibition at Scarborough Museums and Galleries . I loved Edith Sitwell inviting people to create their own stories at Woodend House (of course!), and I was completely spellbound by Baff Akoto's 2020 film Leave The Edge. It's brilliant to see smaller regional galleries and museums programming such beautiful and thought-provoking work, and it has brought such joy to my visit away.

Now that I've got my voice back I'm feeling very honoured to be invited to join the marvellous Shanty Girls and The Shanty Lads for this fundraiser at the beautiful Flynne’s Barn in Borrowdale next week. We'll be in illustrious company with music from O'Regan and Ruth McGrady. So I'm swotting up on my Selkie stories, sploosh!

I had a wonderful time at festival creating the welcome ceremony with a collaboration between the Tatie Pot collective and band and the Cumberlandia village choir, weaving stories and songs to encourage everyone to step out of everyday life and into this incredibly special, generous, beautiful alternative universe. The power of creativity and community combined is an extraordinary thing to experience. Huge thanks to photographer for capturing so many special moments over the weekend, including this shot of me and Gilli.
Also a big thank you to and Handpicked Productions for lending us their fabulous tatter-coat for Gilli to represent the sun - I didn't feel under any pressure at all when creating mine for the moon!😆

Apologies to everyone who tried to come and see me telling stories at Cockermouth Live - I've lost my voice! So it's plenty of quiet nights in with steam inhalation and staying really well hydrated for me! I should have posted when I let the organisers know, but I was feeling a bit too depressed to do that. Everyone has been so kind and supportive. I'd like to send especially huge thanks to the lovely people running all the meditation sessions over the weekend, they provided exactly the gentle nurturing that I needed! 💚

I was having so much fun telling stories and seeing all the other wonderful stalls at Cumbria Nature Festival yesterday that I forgot to take any photos apart from these beautiful new murals at Rivendell. What a fabulous festival- especially for the first year! Congratulations to everyone involved
