Highlights from Five Beacons of Light by Cheryl Frances-Hoad and Di Sherlock and information about the project. The World Premiere of this brand new choral work took place on Saturday 25 April 2026 at Worcester Cathedral.

What a wonderful, inspiring experience to work with the amazing, enthusiastic young voices of Youth Choral Worcs, and Cheryl and Di.

Huge thanks to everyone who has been involved in this remarkable project.

The premiere of Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s new cantata, Five Beacons of Light, in April was the culmination of a project to engage underserved young musicians across Worcestershire. Clare Stevens reports for Music Teacher magazine

‘The premiere was thrilling. Frances-Hoad’s score is full of drama and contrast, exploiting the skill of the professional choir – from which some step-out soloists are drawn – adding lots of colour from the instrumental ensemble (including the loudest wind machine I’ve ever heard, in a marvellous storm scene), and giving the young singers lots to do. At the end, the applause for composer, librettist and performers – especially Ferris, who tightly controlled his forces and communicated such encouragement to the youth choir – was justifiably enthusiastic.’
