🤔 What actually makes a sentence?

Go on, have a think!

Did you say…

✏️ A capital letter?

✏️ Finger spaces?

✏️ A full stop?

You're not alone!

But here's something interesting…

Those are conventions we use when writing a sentence. They're not what actually makes it a sentence!

A sentence needs to communicate a complete thought or idea.

And understanding how to build one is an important foundation for becoming a confident writer.

At Funics, we love an approach called Colourful Semantics, which helps children understand sentence structure through colours, actions and, most importantly, TALKING!

We've written a new blog explaining how we use it in Reception and Year 1, plus some simple activities you can try at home.

Being a wheelbarrow to collect conkers.

Why you may wonder?

We had a story about conkers to start our home ed session and needed to warm up and strengthen our arms, shoulders and hands for writing.

If your child struggles to support themselves try holding their thighs/knees and then as they get stronger move towards the ankles.

We have a few spaces at our home ed session on Friday’s so do get in touch if you’d like to know more.
