School start days vary but this week most children will be back. If your little one is starting school or nursery we really hope they settle well and you enjoy that big smile and hug when they see you at the end of the day. 🤍

If you know me well you’ll know I’m passionate about gross motor development, the vestibular and proprioception systems and the impact on the overall development of children.
I introduced Mighty Muscles to my class, removed most chairs and encouraged movement during the day inside as well as out.

Well today I was excited to watch Helen Battelley talk on Early Years TV about these very things particularly indoor movement.

I bang on about it all the time but still feel it’s not taken as seriously as I want. There is evidence about children’s cognitive development improving with more physical development.
One activity she suggests, I’m going to also add to my practice, is standing for circle time when singing rhymes and introducing more whole body movement such as when they sing round and round on the wheels on the bus they actually spin round - working on their vestibular system.
I’ve got a group called Mighty Muscles on Facebook- I’ve been quiet on there lately as it’s hard work posting and not getting much response. But this needs more response, more of us need to shout about movement both outside and Inside!

The videos on Early Years TV is usually only available free for a week so watch it soon!

🧥 Have you taught your child the backwards coat method?

Place the coat on the floor with the inside facing upwards and the collar nearest your child’s feet.

Then:

1️⃣ Put hands into the sleeves
2️⃣ Lift arms over the head
3️⃣ Flip the coat onto the back

It’s a simple trick, but it can make such a difference when one adult is helping lots of children get ready at the same time!

This week, you could also practise:

👕 Trying on the full uniform and PE kit
👟 Taking off and putting on shoes and socks
🧤 Managing hats and gloves
🏷️ Finding name labels inside clothes and shoes
🥪 Opening lunch and snack containers

Your child doesn’t need to be able to read, write or do everything independently before starting school. 💚

Sometimes, the smallest practical skills make the biggest difference:

✨ Recognising their name on a peg
✨ Knowing where to find the label in their jumper
✨ Opening their water bottle
✨ Putting their shoes back on after PE
✨ Telling an adult when they need the toilet
✨ Asking for help when they feel sad or unwell

In a busy classroom, adults may not immediately notice that a child is fidgeting because they need the toilet or has become quiet because something is wrong.

Practising simple phrases such as “Please can you help me?” can give your child the confidence to communicate what they need.
