Kids will have the chance to dig into the story, learn excerpts of the children's chorus music, and put on a staged performance of the scene for all accompanying adults! And yes - there will be foam swords ⚔

Love history? Love opera? How about both!

Æthelflæd is a bold, 90 minute, fully staged opera that tells the epic story of the Battle of 910AD in which Queen Aethelflaed led her army to victory against the Vikings. Sung in Old English and performed by five principal singers, chorus, and a full orchestra, the opera fuses the grandeur of traditional opera with a modern sonic edge.

Come join us for a stop on our UK cathedral tour, for an evening of live excerpts from the opera sung by internationally acclaimed soprano Rachel Kobernick, narrated by New York based composer Andre Fratto. 🌈 VENUE SPOTLIGHT #3: TAMWORTH

Our final stop on the Aethelflaed | A New Opera - Cathedral Tour brings us to the magnificent St. Editha's Parish Church in Tamworth: the historic capital of Mercia and the very town where Aethelflaed established one of her most important fortified burhs.

One of the church's greatest treasures is its extraordinary stained glass collection, featuring works by renowned artists including William Morris, Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Ford Madox Brown, and William Wailes. The church is also home to a beautiful modern Aethelflaed Window, dedicated in 2018 to commemorate the Lady of the Mercians and her enduring legacy.

Join us as we conclude the tour in the heart of Aethelflaed's own kingdom.

⛪ Venue Spotlight #2: PENRITH

Our next stop on the Aethelflaed | A New Opera - Cathedral Tour brings us to St. Andrew's Church in Penrith, one of Cumbria's most historic and beautiful churches.

Dating back to the medieval period (with a tower from the 12th and 13th centuries), St. Andrew's is home to the famous Giant's Grave and Giant's Thumb: Anglo-Saxon monuments that have stood for over 1,000 years. For a story set in the world of Anglo-Saxon England, there could hardly be a more fitting venue.

Join us as we bring the story of Mercia's warrior queen to this remarkable historic setting.

🏰 Venue Spotlight: WANTAGE

Our first stop on the Aethelflaed | A New Opera Cathedral Tour takes us to Wantage, the birthplace of King Alfred the Great and home of AlfredFest, an annual celebration of Anglo-Saxon history. As the daughter of Alfred, Aethelflaed's story is deeply connected to this remarkable town, making it a fitting place to begin our journey through England's historic sacred spaces.

The recital and children's workshop will take place at Wantage Parish Church (SS Peter & Paul), a stunning medieval church with over 1,300 years of Christian worship on the site. The present building dates largely from the 13th century and features a magnificent central tower, medieval choir stalls, historic bells, and one of the largest parish church interiors in the region.

Join us as we bring the story of Mercia's warrior queen back to the very heart of Anglo-Saxon England.
