Wokingham Theatre

Wokingham Theatre WT is a leading amateur theatre company staging 8+ productions each year at our own 160 seat theatre. It is a local gem for all Wokingham residents to enjoy.

Wokingham Theatre (WT) is one of the longest-running community theatre groups in the Berkshire area. Formed in 1947, the group moved to their current location in 1986. Hidden away next to the Cantley House Hotel on the outskirts of the town, WT puts on eight full-length productions a year of outstanding quality that belies the ‘am-dram’ tag. On each performance night, up to sixty people can have b

een involved in getting the show on its feet. From directing to designing stage sets, from on-stage to behind the scenes and even running the bar in the interval, WT is a thriving amateur group with over two hundred members making it a centre of creativity for young and old, veterans and beginners. We have an annual audience attendance figure of over eleven thousand people.

📣 AUDITION NOTICE 📣

Some good news for your Monday morning. It may only be the middle of June, but we're so excited to share audition details for our Christmas show, the incomparable One Man, Two Guvnors.

This fast-paced, farcical comedy is based on Carlo Goldoni’s 1743 commedia dell’arte play The Servant of Two Masters and is perhaps best known for the National Theatre's hughly-successful run starring James Corden.

1960s Brighton. Francis is dim-witted yet charming, and has accidentally landed two employers who absolutely cannot meet. A riotous, laugh-out-loud comedy packed with physical gags, quick wit and irresistible energy.

So for one final time, Romantic Comedy, over and out 🎇🎆

"There was magic on that stage"
"I've been coming to WT for over 40 years, this is one of their very best"
"They looked like they were having so much fun on stage"
"The moving scene behind the windows was spectacular. I've never seen anything like it"
"Did I get lost? Is this the West End?"

With just ONE performance left for Romantic Comedy, we wanted to take the opportunity to say a huge congratulations to the cast and crew for all you've achieved.

These audience comments from the last few days speak for themselves 👏

There's still quite a lot of seats left for tonight, but we'd love to end on a high. So if you haven't booked your ticket yet, please do. And don't be put off by a house that looks less full currently, this cast have the energy to fill the rafters!

📣 AUDITION NOTICE 📣

We are pleased to share the audition notice for the first of our new Studio Night productions. Death And The Maiden by Ariel Dorfman won the Olivier award for best new play in 1992 and is a fiercely intelligent, claustrophobic, and morally complex thriller.

A remote South American beach house. A chance encounter. A past that refuses to stay buried, thanks to the arrival of a stranger one night. This psychological drama is a gripping and deeply unsettling battle of memory, justice, and power.

Readthrough: Friday 26 June: 7.45pm, WT foyer
Auditions: Friday 3 July: 7.45pm, WT foyer
Sunday 5 July: 2.30pm, WT Foyer
Rehearsals: TBC but likely to be Mondays, Wednesday and some Sundays.
Performances: 11 to 14 November

🎭 The creative opportunities for getting involved with a Wokingham Theatre production extend far beyond acting, with the technical teams backstage providing the beating heart of theatre life.

A production’s technical elements – set, sound, lights, costume, props, stage management etc – are so important; without them, it’s just people standing on stage.

It is the creativity of the technical team that makes a play come to life. And we want to make it more accessible to people wishing to learn these skills.

As we approach our 2026-27 season, our Technical Director, Gary, is welcoming anyone who'd like to try their hand at a technical skill, either existing member or new.

If you'd like to join the backstage crew at Wokingham Theatre, drop Gary an email at [email protected] to have a chat.

We're excited to announce that our 'season extras' are returning for our 2026/27 season, this timer under a new banner: Studio Nights.

WT are thrilled to present these one-week only productions, presented in a black-box set on our main stage.

Each performance will begin at 8:30pm, with time to enjoy a drink in our bar beforehand - there'll be music to enjoy, plus specialty cocktails, and tickets are only £12!

In November, we present Ariel Dorfman's legendary Death and the Maiden, and in April 2027, Nick Payne's Olivier Award-winning Constellations.

These productions offer an exciting chance for new directors, performers, designers, and crew to get involved at WT, all whilst expanding the repertoire of shows that we stage.

Interested in getting involved? Find out more about membership on our website: wokinghamtheatre.org.uk/membership
