IN THE STUDIO WITH Berni Cooper — Reflecting on South East Open Studios.

Based in the Tunbridge Wells area, ceramic artist Berni Cooper creates modern, functional Japanese and Korean influenced stoneware. Her work ranges from teabowls and ramen bowls to plates, jugs and vases — each piece unique, shaped by a variety of glazes and textures that bring depth, contrast and character to her forms.

Berni’s practice is rooted in clarity of form and the quiet beauty of everyday objects. Her ceramics balance simplicity with intention, drawing on Asian influences to create pieces that feel both contemporary and timeless. Through subtle colour palettes, layered glazes and tactile surfaces, her work celebrates craftsmanship, functionality and the meditative rhythm of making.

It was a pleasure to celebrate Berni’s work this year and to see visitors connecting with her ceramics, her process and her distinctive Japanese‑ and Korean‑influenced style. IN THE STUDIO WITH Claudia Wiegand — Reflecting on South East Open Studios.

Based in the Tunbridge Wells area, glass artist Claudia Wiegand has been exploring light, colour and form through the transformative medium of glass for over 20 years. She loves experimenting with fusing techniques, using the material in its various forms — from solid sheet glass to powders and frits — adding enamels and metal inclusions, and applying various casting and printing techniques, constantly expanding her designs.

The natural world remains a constant influence. Trees, shifting light, landscape and travel inform the rhythm and palette of her work. From sculptures, wall artworks and statement bowls to splashbacks and installations, each piece is designed with intention — created to energise, uplift and bring luminous presence into modern interiors. Rather than literal representation, she seeks to capture essence — the elemental patterns of nature, the energy of growth, the quiet strength found in organic forms. At its core, Claudia’s practice is about transformation — of material, of space, and of feeling.

It was a pleasure to celebrate Claudia’s work this year and to see visitors connecting with her glass sculptures, wall pieces and luminous installations. The conversations, the new studio‑gallery space and the shared creative energy made her SEOS experience especially meaningful.

IN THE STUDIO WITH Annie Graham — Reflecting on South East Open Studios.

Based in the Tunbridge Wells area, acrylic painter Annie creates minimalist, linear and ordered urban landscapes. She is inspired by structures, angles and shadows, drawn to the colours, shapes and contrasts found in engineered and organic forms — all under blue skies that often shape the atmosphere of her work.

Annie paints in acrylic, focusing on clarity, precision and the interplay between architecture and light. Her work captures the rhythm of urban spaces, distilling buildings and streets into simplified compositions that highlight balance, geometry and movement.

Reflecting on her South East Open Studios experience, Annie shared:

“South East Open Studios was and is always a worthwhile event. Meeting people who have very kindly taken the time to come and view your work is wonderful.
This year, I exhibited at a new space called The Q Gallery in Bells Yew Green. It has a fantastic space to showcase one’s work, whether it be small or large.
I think our visitors enjoyed attending and found it a good experience.”

IN THE STUDIO WITH Caroline Daly — Reflecting on South East Open Studios.

Based in the Tunbridge Wells area, oil painter Caroline Daly is drawn to the emotional connection she feels with the natural world through light, movement and colour. She began showing her work at galleries, exhibitions and fairs in 2023, and has also taken part in Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year as a Wildcard — an experience that further shaped her artistic journey.

Caroline paints mainly in oils, exploring how light shifts across a surface and how movement can be captured in stillness. Her work often reflects the atmosphere of a moment, using colour and reflection to create paintings that feel both immersive and quietly expressive.

Reflecting on her South East Open Studios experience, Caroline shared:

“Exhibiting with another artist, Maria Russell, whose work is completely different from mine, gives the Open Studios experience a richer and more exciting tone. Being able to create together and share our practices is hugely beneficial for us, but also interesting for visitors to see. There were many conversations about our different styles and the range of paintings on show. Having close contact with visitors who share their viewpoints and offer suggestions for new work going forward was incredibly encouraging and enriching.”

IN THE STUDIO WITH Laurie Harpum - Reflecting on South East Open Studios.

Based on the Isle of Sheppey, ceramic, mixed-media and sculpture artist Laurie Harpum draws inspiration from her environment and from the objects she finds along the shoreline - things washed up by the sea, tumbled from the cliffs, or lost and rediscovered. Her practice is shaped by the landscape around her and by the materials she gathers, combining found objects with new elements in clay, metal and wood. She’s drawn to textures that tell a story: corrosion, erosion, and the marks left by weather, use and time.

Alongside her studio practice, Laurie works as a community arts practitioner, creating opportunities for people to engage with creativity in her local area.

Reflecting on her South East Open Studios experience, Laurie shared how much she’s enjoyed taking part over the past two years. She met Lila-Rose shortly before signing up for SEOS 2025, it turned out they have a lot in common - starting from similar inspirations but creating completely different work. Beach-combing trips have become a regular part of their shared practice.

For Laurie, SEOS is a chance to show her work locally and connect with both visitors and other artists. Being on the Isle of Sheppey means people make a special journey to visit, and that commitment makes the experience especially meaningful.

IN THE STUDIO WITH Lorraine Singer- Reflecting on South East Open Studios.

Based in Robertsbridge, ceramic artist Lorraine Singer opens her home studio to the public each year as part of South East Open Studios - something she describes as one of the highlights of her calendar. Joining together with a group of local artists not only provides valuable, affirming exposure for their work and practice, but also fosters a collaborative spirit amongst fellow exhibitors.

“Growing up in rural Sussex left its mark. If boredom set in, I would be sent to make mud pies and always encouraged outdoors. Coincidentally, one of my favourite toys was a mini potter’s wheel - l always tried desperately to make real pots!”

Lorraine’s ceramics use a soft natural palette, mixing traditional stoneware with home-dug, iron-rich Sussex clay to create texture and patina on ceramic forms, slips and glazes. Exploring the possibilities offered by her fast-fire wood kiln, she is experimenting with a range of different materials and firing techniques.

IN THE STUDIO WITH Annabel Wyllie — Reflecting on South East Open Studios.

Based in Hawkhurst, Annabel Wyllie is an experienced printmaker working across collage, mixed media and printmaking. She combines a variety of printmaking techniques to create unique, layered and abstracted images of her imagined world.

Reflecting on her South East Open Studios experience, Annabel shared:

“It was wonderful to share Open Studios 2026 with two artist friends who ! admire greatly, Susanandreae and Marigold Plunkett. Together we gave demonstrations in Tetrapak printing and it was wonderful to see the look of amazement and excitement on the face of someone pulling their first ever print.

In quieter moments we were able to talk about our future plans, thoughts and ideas. Talking to visitors with genuine interest in our work is both affirming and encouraging and helps build a new confidence going forward. A wonderful experience on many levels.”

It was a pleasure to celebrate Annabel’s work this year and to see visitors engaging with her demonstrations, her techniques and her imaginative prints. The shared studio, the conversations and the sense of discovery made her Open Studios experience rich on many levels.

In the Studio with Carole Robson Reflecting on South East Open Studios.

Based in Hadlow, Carole Robson is a mixed media artist, painter and printmaker whose work is inspired by meadows, woodland and wild places.

Her paintings are loose, expressive and full of movement, often created in watercolour and mixed media. Carole is also the author of Painting Expressive Landscapes and Painting in Abstract, both published by Search Press.

For Carole, art and nature have been intertwined since childhood. A love of art led her to study at St. Martin’s School of Art in London, followed by a career in illustration and later teaching a wide variety of art courses for Kent Adult Education. She paints mainly in watercolour, combining it with inks, drawing media and collage to create contemporary images with abstract elements and vibrant colour schemes. Carole also works in digital art, layering her paintings to create new abstractions and vivid colours - producing limited edition prints that often inspire new paintings in return.

Reflecting on her South East Open Studios experience, Carole shared:

“The great thing about open studios is that it allows artists not only to exhibit their art, but to meet and chat to visitors, build relationships with other artists and art lovers. This doesn’t usually happen at exhibitions and the feedback that we get can be both valuable as well as motivational!”

Carole has written two fully illustrated art books for Search Press, packed with creative ideas and examples of her work. Both are available online and from all good booksellers.

In the Studio with Cheryl Cunningham Reflecting on the South East Open Studio.

Based in the Maidstone area, Cheryl Cunningham is a mixed media artist whose work is inspired by a deep connection with the natural world. Using collage, painting and found materials, alongside site soils, sand, seawater and improvised tools, she creates expressive works that capture the quiet beauty and calming energy of our coast and countryside.

Reflecting on her South East Open Studios experience, Cheryl shared:

“Open Studios is such a great opportunity to connect with visitors, and to share the stories behind the paintings. Seeing an emotional response to my work is priceless.”

In the Studio with Philippa Futrell Reflecting on South East Open Studios.

Based in Rye, Philippa Futrell is a painter whose work captures atmosphere and movement across the landscape. Using water- based media, she explores the wild corridors that cross our country, creating paintings that shift from observation into a more personal reality.

Reflecting on her South East Open Studios experience, Philippa shared:

“When you open your studio to the public you know you are not inviting strangers into your home, but art lovers into your world. Many cannot afford to buy, but the encouraging, excited conversations about art and creativity, long or short, are worth the initial fear that no one will come: if that moment occurs when they realise they cannot leave a piece behind - well that’s special and unique each time.”

It was a pleasure to celebrate Philippa’s work this year and to see visitors connecting with her paintings. The openness of her studio and the conversations that unfolded made her space a welcoming place for curiosity, creativity and genuine connection.
