IN THE STUDIO WITH Berni Cooper — Reflecting on South East Open Studios.
Based in the Tunbridge Wells area, ceramic artist Berni Cooper creates modern, functional Japanese and Korean influenced stoneware. Her work ranges from teabowls and ramen bowls to plates, jugs and vases — each piece unique, shaped by a variety of glazes and textures that bring depth, contrast and character to her forms.
Berni’s practice is rooted in clarity of form and the quiet beauty of everyday objects. Her ceramics balance simplicity with intention, drawing on Asian influences to create pieces that feel both contemporary and timeless. Through subtle colour palettes, layered glazes and tactile surfaces, her work celebrates craftsmanship, functionality and the meditative rhythm of making.
It was a pleasure to celebrate Berni’s work this year and to see visitors connecting with her ceramics, her process and her distinctive Japanese‑ and Korean‑influenced style. The conversations, the new gallery space and the engagement from visitors made her South East Open Studio experience especially rewarding.
