SHE HAS ARRIVED! 🚪

The Scottish Opera door, now affectionately named Doreen, has officially arrived at Bright Door Studios!

After an absolute workout getting her up the stairs, nearly invoking vomit on more than one occasion, we made it to the top 😂

And there she stands, tall and magnificent in the gallery space, waiting for the very first artist to transform her for our opening exhibition.

Doreen will become our revolving door of art, transformed by different artists throughout the year, adding new stories to a door that has already lived quite the life on stage.

Applications for The Door Project will be live by the weekend, but if you fancy getting your hands on Doreen and being one of the artists to transform her, please DM us to express your interest 😃

Two weeks down at Bright Door Studios!
And somehow, in just two weeks, this old gym is really starting to feel like our creative space.

Windows fixed and finally letting the light flood in, the old gym sign is down,the sauna has gone the bathroom is out, makers are joining us, plans are being made and there is STILL so much painting.

We’re tired, excited and slightly overwhelmed by just how much support we’ve had already.

Our Crowdfunder is still open and every donation and share genuinely helps us get these doors open.

Two weeks down. Bright Door is coming to life. 💛

Let there be light! ☀️

Our windows are fixed! The boarded-up windows are finally open again and the amount of light flooding into the space has made such a difference already.

We took a wee break over the weekend because, quite frankly, we all needed it 😂 But we’re back at it and there’s loads happening this week.

The old gym sign is down, the old manky bathroom is being ripped out, and naturally there is still an unbelievable amount of painting to do!

Makers emails have been sent out (we are SO excited to get you all into the space!) and the mural jam is being curated and we can’t wait to see what everyone brings to these walls.

Bit by bit, it’s starting to feel less like the old gym and more like Bright Door Studios. 💛

So when I saw that Scottish Opera was selling off old props today… obviously I couldn’t just let that happen without going for a look

Despite being completely overwhelmed by the crowds, I managed to bag some chairs. Then, while standing in the queue guarding said chairs with my life, I spotted it…

A door.

Not just any door. A door on casters, already mounted on its own frame. A door that has probably held so many stories and lived so many lives on stage.

It was meant to be.

I’ve been looking for the perfect door for one of our permanent installations at Bright Door Studios, a door that artists will be invited to paint throughout the year, changing again and again. A revolving door of art, with each artist adding another chapter to its story.

And somehow, a retired theatre prop from Scottish Opera feels like the absolute perfect door for it.

Going back to pick it up next week because there was no squeezing that into the car today

What a wee bit of kismet. From the stage to Bright Door Studios… its story isn’t finished yet. 🚪

Today was a wee run-about day!

First stop was Govanhill to pick up some chairs, which naturally turned into reminiscing about old haunts, followed by coffee and a pastry at Jeju, absolutely delicious.

Then it was back to the studio to get a bit more painting done before the school pick-up.

Later we met with the lovely Jamie from Tyger Security to chat through some bits and bobs, and ended up learning loads about the history of the buildings behind us. Apparently the donkeys from the old bakery used to sleep in them, and some of those buildings have been there for hundreds of years! Every day we seem to uncover another wee bit of history about this place.

Then back out again to have a nosey at some pews from the old parish church, which is currently being renovated. Obviously we couldn't just look... 😂 So two of the pews will soon be making their way up to Bright Door Studios — along with two old organ pipes, because apparently I can't be trusted around interesting old things.

Honestly, we feel so lucky with the support we've been receiving since getting the keys. The donations, shares, offers of help, kind words and people just genuinely wanting to see this place come to life mean so much.

It makes me feel slightly less mad for taking this whole thing on 😂

MAKERS WANTED!

We’re looking for local, homegrown makers to join the Makers Space, our wee shop inside Bright Door Studios.

We want to fill our shelves with handmade, unique products created by talented makers from our communities.

Jewellers, printmakers, candle makers, ceramicists, textile artists, illustrators and everything in between, we want to hear from you.

Artists wishing to sell original work or prints are also very welcome to apply.

We want the shop to be a real celebration of what’s being made right here on our doorstep, and we genuinely can’t wait to see what you create.

Please note, AI-generated artwork or products will not be accepted. We’re all about supporting real people, real skills and real creativity.

✨ ONE WEEK DOWN! ✨

And wow… we’ve done a POWER! 💪🎨

While we’ve been painting, sanding, fixing and generally transforming the place, we’ve also been excitedly chatting about what to do with our massive stairwell, reception area and lavvy…

And obviously, blank walls + a building full of creatives = MURAL JAM! 🎨🔥

We’d love to invite fellow artists to come and leave their mark on Bright Door Studios.

You’ll be working to our Bright Door colour scheme, but what you create within that is completely up to you — your style, your ideas and your creativity… as long as it’s family friendly lol 😂

Today we eased into the day a wee bit… my sidekick and I headed to the carpet shop to price up flooring.

Well… that was a very quick NOPE 😂 Even the guy in the shop couldn’t quite believe the amount of floor space we were talking about! So we abandoned that plan, had a wee browse elsewhere, stocked up on snacks (essential renovation supplies) and then I headed over to the studio.

I got stuck into fixing what I could of the floor and, actually… it turned out pretty damn well! 🙌 A massive help was the carpet tiles we found hiding in one of the cupboards — free flooring is definitely our favourite kind of flooring right now 😂

A good hoover and freshen up later and that area is looking pretty decent!

Meanwhile T***s tackled the shop space and back studio, getting the next coats of paint down. The old sauna was also collected today, so tomorrow’s job is cleaning up that area and seeing what we’ve got to work with.

We haven’t even had the keys a full week yet and I’m genuinely so proud of us and how much we’ve managed to achieve already. 🥹🚪🎨

There’s still a LOT to do, but every filled hole, painted wall, patched floor and donated bit and bob is getting us closer to opening those Bright Doors. 💛

Progress made today! 🙌🚪

The sauna has officially been dismantled, and WOW, what a difference! It’s given us a brilliant big hall space and suddenly we can really see how much room we’ve got to play with.

All the doors have been primed, we’ve started tackling some repairs to the floor, and there was a LOT of standing staring at the gallery floor trying to decide what on earth we’re doing with it 😂

Then came my battle with Henry. The wrong Henry, to be precise. Wrong plug. Nearly sent me over the edge. A swap was made and off he went, smug as anything with his wee face staring back at me. 😑😂

The last of the metal boards are down too, and even better, someone came to re-home the ones we removed! The sauna is also heading off to a new home, so it’s really lovely seeing things being reused rather than just becoming waste. ♻️

We finished up absolutely burst, grabbed dinner from the local Chinese and I am now running a bath because I think my entire body has officially had enough for today. 😂

Another day closer to opening those Bright Doors! 🌈🚪

What a difference a bit of white makes! 🤍🙌

Today was all about getting that first white wash over those big black panels and WOW, the space somehow feels even bigger… which we didn’t think was possible! 😂

It’s so good seeing more light bouncing around the room and watching the Studios slowly start to take shape.

And a HUGE thank you to the team today, you absolutely did a power! 💪🎨 Look at that transformation!

Next up… Fixing the floor and priming doors
