What a great evening in the open air this was on a lovely sunny (slightly windy) Wednesday in May, something a bit different for the team and so much fun!
We had a few passers by who wondered what we were up to, but from one curious couple who approached us we’ve actually acquired another investigation, so we’re pleased about that, watch this space! 🤗
I’m sure we’ll be going back to Bawsey at some point as we got some good results here with a fair bit of interesting information being picked up by us and our equipment.
Investigation No. 67 : Bawsey church : 27/05/26
Bawsey church is now a derelict ruin to the North East of King’s Lynn. Norman in origin, when a local land owner cleared the existing village for land to graze sheep, unfortunately it meant that the church was isolated from the village it served. Falling into disrepair, it was last used functionally in the late 1700s, when a Priest would hold a service there once a year. It is now a grade 1 listed building.
THE TEAM: Nicky, Eddie, Jo, Hannah, Terry, Mark.
Arriving at the ruins there was no initial sense of anything there, but there was a feeling of being observed, and humming was heard in the aisle we were using as our start point. We set out REMpods and catballs, while this was being carried out Nicky heard some raspy breathing while with my eyes closed I ‘saw’ something block out the sun as it passed behind her. Despite opening my eyes there was nothing visible and we were the only people up there. Nicky then started playing some monastic chanting. This changed the atmosphere in the church to something pleasant, and the energy ramped up. Some of the K2s started to flicker; we asked how many spirits were with us…… one of us said 15, at which a K2 went to yellow and someone else got a response on the K2 when mentioning the name of ‘Fran’. When asked if they liked the music, another three K2’s went to yellow. Buoyed by our success we asked if they could answer by using the K2, at which a meter immediately went to orange. One thing we are sure about, is that the meters only lit up when we asked questions and no other time.
Using a Hexacom word generator we got some communications which included ‘occult & Beelzebub’. It was at this time Hannah started using the Estes method, which also led to some amazing results! We asked them to “talk to us”, which was replied with, ‘go away you’re droning on’. We then asked “don’t you like us here?”, only to be answered with, ‘I’ve had enough, please for the love of God, it’s holy time, the whole lot of ya, witch’. Surprisingly the next thing to come was, ‘pay up doll’. Confused, we replied with “what for?”, ‘offering God, the church coins’, in the basket, drop it’. Searching for some coins, Mark found some and placed them on the ground in front of Hannah. The reply came through Hannah, ‘goodbye, Christ be in the your name’. We appeared to have appeased them!
Things became a little stranger.
Hannah continued with ’he’s coming’, ‘hump’, and ‘that would be helpful’, possibly with hump referring to the mound the church is situated on. Following this the rest of the group started walking behind Hannah, heading to the central tower and asked “can we come this way?” - ‘you know you can’ was the answer. Bear in mind that Hannah can still neither see or hear anyone. The words kept coming in a continuous flow, with a serious tone, ‘he took his own life and all his family, I hate protestants, burn, you can burn, accuse him, clairvoyant, you know what you are, burn sinner burn, Joanne sinner burn’. At this point Nicky said something to be countered with, ‘Nicky burn’. As if this was not enough Hannah continued in the same vein, ‘in God he’s here, in grace of name, feel the pain, condemn, you, you are a nut, kill naughty you, sinner, holy water, one down one across, forehead (crossing yourself?), the spirit, witch she’s a witch, women expensive’.
In an attempt to initiate a more ‘normal’ conversation,. we requested that whoever it was should speak with us, to which the answer was ‘I will’, followed by ‘abolish the witch, revenge’. In asking “revenge for what”, we were treated to another tirade, ‘sin, I’m not happy in God’s church on God’s Earth, sir, watch, nasty, brave of you, porky, oink oink, I made you, negative, leave, fine then girl, behind you on the wall, behind you x3’. With this last remark, turning round to look, Jo was sitting on the wall behind both Hannah and myself, obviously unseen by Hannah.
After this it was as if there was a change in the person contacting us as the language and subject changed dramatically. Starting with ‘idiot’ we went on to hear ‘archway, do you mind, cretin, move move’. When we said we did not want to move, we were told again to ‘move’. Reiterating that we came with respect, we were answered with, ‘where, I don’t respect you’. We then seemed to revert back to our original ‘religious spirit’, giving us ‘burn burn, witch witch witch, evil, clairvoyant that is a fact, North East, you’re in my way, daytime, go on, come look at ya, you people, he was good looking once, good looking, Edward, oink, I’m sorry x2, I can’t answer you, come near, I think I can, I’m a priest, I don’t believe in it, speaking to you, bible’.
A young couple had arrived to visit the church and had entered from behind Hannah, they were speaking quietly with the other members of the team.
Suddenly the Estes gave us ‘get off the phone’. Looking round, I could see that one of them was on their phone. The next message was ‘follow me, Facebook’! Asking the person if they were on Facebook the answer was confirmed, they were! The Estes said ‘you’re right’! At this point, Hannah was still blindfolded, and as such wouldn’t have realised that anyone had joined us, or hear any dialogue. The religious overtone continued as we heard ‘she’s a sinner’. Discussing what to do next, the Ouija board was mentioned, only to be met with ‘not in my house’!
We heard the word ‘Pappi’ on the Alice app. Interestingly, the word ‘pappi’ means Father or Dad in many European languages. In addition to this, at this time the area would have been deeply involved in the Hanseatic league trading, and in the Finnish language ‘pappi’ actually means ‘priest’, which obviously bears relevance to our location.
There were some strange sounds heard here, but they were most likely from the wind blowing around and through the many craggy and holed parts of the stonework.
With darkness closing in, and the mosquitoes and gnats wanting to get better acquainted with us, we decided to leave this ruinous edifice of Norfolk’s past.
