Something feels different this year. ❤️

Last summer, if we didn’t have an event on, there was a pretty good chance no one would come through the door.

That’s the reality of starting a business like ours, especially somewhere with almost no passing trade. You work really, really hard just to let people know you’re here, and then even harder to make sure they remember you exist.

We pushed constantly. New events, new menus, social posts, ads, posters, more ideas. And even with incredible artists and brilliant events, there were nights when we’d be lucky to have 10 people in the building.

That hurts financially, but it can also be soul-destroying for us and for the artists and organisers who’ve put so much into making something happen.

So a massive shout-out to all the DJs, musicians, artists, promoters, chefs, community groups and event organisers who kept showing up and creating things here. You gave people a reason to discover us in the first place. ❤️

But this year, something has shifted.

We’re seeing new faces AND lots of regulars. And increasingly, people aren’t coming because there’s an event on.

They’re just coming to OSA.

For coffee, food, a beer, the terrace, to meet friends, work, chat or simply because they fancy coming down.

And honestly, that feels like a pretty big milestone.

As the weather turns, remember we’re still here. OSA swaps sunny terrace days for warm lighting, cosy corners, good food, drinks and company.

Although it’s only September, so we’re definitely not giving up on the terrace just yet. ☀️🍂

Thank you to everyone who found us, remembered us, recommended us and keeps coming back. ❤️

🍴 Let’s talk about our evening menus…

Our kitchen is open 6–9pm every Thursday, Friday & Saturday, and over the last year we’ve been developing our menus, listening to your feedback and discovering what works best at OSA.

As one of the only fully plant-based venues in the area, we want to show just how varied plant-based food can be, with different cuisines across the week and regular new dishes.

🌮 Thursday: Taco Night – colourful, flavour-packed and a firm favourite.

🐟 Friday: Vegan Fish & Chip Shop – proper Friday night comfort food, without the fish!

Everything is available to takeaway too, and we’re only a five-minute stroll from the Thames if you fancy dinner by the river.

But Saturdays have never quite felt right.

Our regular menu works brilliantly when people want a quick bite before an event, but whenever we’ve created something more special, like our recent fully booked four-course Italian night, the whole space changes.

People chat across tables, strangers meet and dinner becomes a wonderfully relaxed, social experience.

So from September, Saturday nights are changing. ❤️

Each month, one of our chefs will take over the Saturday menu, giving them space to experiment, get creative and serve something a little special.

First up is Chef Cam, an absolute wizard at making seitan from scratch and recreating familiar flavours and textures without the animals.

🥢 Vietnamese tofu meatballs, five-spice mushrooms, rice noodles & greens (GF)

🍝 Homemade potato gnocchi, lightly spiced tomato sauce, garlic coconut cream & cashew parmesan

🥙 Marinated seitan chik’n skewers, flatbread, tzatziki, couscous & tahini

We want Saturday nights at OSA to feel a little special. Great food, creative chefs, a relaxed atmosphere and the kind of dining room where you might arrive with one group of people and end up chatting to everyone around you. 🌱❤️

🌱 LET’S TALK ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY

What does being “sustainable” actually mean in a world of greenwashing and clever marketing?

At OSA, we don’t claim to be perfect.

We don’t call ourselves 100% carbon neutral or offset our footprint somewhere else and use that as a reason to stop questioning our impact here.

Instead, we try to make conscious choices about what we do, what we buy and how we operate.

Sometimes those choices cost more or aren’t the most profitable option. And there are still things we haven’t found a good environmental solution for.

But we’re trying.

🌱 Our entire menu is plant based.
Research shows plant-based diets can have dramatically lower greenhouse-gas emissions and land use than high-meat diets.

We’re not here to convert anyone. But if more of us simply ate more plant-based meals, collectively it could make a real difference.

♻️ We think about what we buy.
We consider packaging, waste and recyclability. Our crisp packets are compostable, and where practical we choose easily recyclable materials such as aluminium.

🍺 We buy local.
We stock beer from all three Windsor breweries, supporting independent businesses and building a more local supply chain.

🔥 We heat people, not an enormous warehouse.
Our café uses infrared heating, warming people and surfaces rather than trying to heat the entire volume of our warehouse.

🌍 And we’re still learning.

Zero-waste advocate Anne-Marie Bonneau said:

“We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.”

We think the same applies to sustainability.

Some decisions are big, like running a plant-based kitchen. Others are tiny. And some things we still haven’t solved.

Sustainability isn’t about being perfect. It’s about continuing to question, change and try to do better.

🌍 Did you know?
Every third Thursday we host People, Planet, Pint at OSA. It’s free to attend and a chance to meet, share ideas and have conversations about sustainability with others who care about people and planet.

And we’d love to learn from you too.

What could we be doing better? 🌱

Sometimes a space takes time to grow into.

Because every event we host is so different, we’re constantly learning how best to use OSA.

Music & Words has been running for almost eight years. It spent nearly six of those at The Hope, where it developed a really special intimacy, before making the move with us to OSA.

Our upstairs stage is brilliant. The sound is fantastic, the lighting is great, and we’ve seen how completely the room can transform depending on what’s happening.

Theatre-style seating turns it into an intimate concert venue. Take away the chairs and tables, bring the lights down, add a little smoke, and it becomes a dark, danceable space for electronic music. For bands, that stage can absolutely come alive.

But Music & Words never quite felt the same as it did at The Hope.

Last night, we tried something different.

Instead of putting the performers on stage, we put the audience on it.

The performers came down onto the floor, surrounded by everyone. We swapped the main PA for a small, simple setup and brought everything much closer together.

And boom. There it was.

It stopped feeling like a concert and started feeling like a gathering.

People talked. They connected during the break. They stayed afterwards. The line between performer and audience became much less defined, which is exactly what Music & Words has always been about.

It made me realise something quite simple: for some events, the stage is the enabler. For this one, it was the barrier.

So this is how Music & Words will work from now on.

We’re going to spend a little time putting in permanent lighting and sound for this setup so the room can switch easily into its Music & Words format.

Nearly eight years in and the event is still evolving.

And OSA is too.

Thank you to everyone who came last night, performed, listened, talked and stayed. It was a really wonderful evening, and it feels like we’ve finally found Music & Words’ home within the space. ❤️

❤️ A post for the people who make OSA, OSA.

We talk a lot about our artists, events, food and community, but this one is for the people who make it all possible: our team.

Working at OSA isn’t always easy. No two shifts are the same. It could be live music, a packed private party, DJs on the terrace, a pop-up restaurant, a family event, or a quiet café shift that suddenly gets VERY busy.

We do a lot in a small space. Sometimes four people are working in our little 8m² service area, making coffees, cocktails and homemade plant-based food at the same time.

Then there are the stairs! Our main bar, dishwasher and glasswasher are upstairs, while much of summer is spent serving the terrace. Add an old warehouse that’s freezing in winter and roasting in summer, and it can be a pretty physical job.

Being a small team also means covering shifts, staying late, switching roles and adapting when things don’t go to plan.

Yet one of the things mentioned most often in our five-star reviews is our staff. ❤️

Their friendliness, attentiveness, passion and the way they make people feel welcome.

We genuinely believe our team is one of the most important parts of OSA. They deliver what we do with passion and compassion, and we’re incredibly proud of the way they carry the OSA vision forward.

So, simply: thank you to our brilliant team.

And thank you to everyone who eats, drinks, dances, listens, creates and celebrates with us. Every time you support OSA, you’re supporting the people working incredibly hard behind the scenes to make this slightly bonkers little place work. ❤️
