I first read this book when leant it by a senior ophthalmologist, who recognised my love of understanding sight through an artistic perspective. Conditions affecting both the mind and eyes are hinted at in the ways people move their brushes, pose their muses and focus their cameras. This book epitomises how perfectly medicine, art and literature all go together.

Patrick Trevor-Roper (1916-2004) was an ophthalmologist, rights activist, author, and editor to the predecessor of ‘Eye’ for 38 years (then called ‘Transactions of the Ophthalmological Society UK’). He also established the Haile Selassie Eye Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as well as others in Nigeria and Sierra Leone. His obituary on the BMJ is a very inspirational read!

As I sit and reminisce my favourite days, my pen glides.
Its ink bleeds and the tree
behind me whispers.
Her voice sounds like wind,
her mouth is the sky. And I wonder how
to translate the experience of my eyes
into words and text.
