Winchester City Festival Choir

Winchester City Festival Choir Wi******er City Festival Choir is a group of around 50 singers (soprano, tenor, alto and bass voices) of all ages and musical interests.

We perform largely classical music from all periods.. Our musical director is Barbara Hoefling, who encourages choir members to improve their singing techniques and extend their musical repertoire. The choir is based in Wi******er and gives concerts at various locations in and around the city. We normally rehearse on Wednesdays from 7.45pm to 9.30pm at the Littleton Millenium Memorial Hall. Check with our secretary if you want to attend a rehearsal.

Composed in 1863, this masterwork stands as a testament to Rossini’s genius, deftly bridging his celebrated operatic flair with profound spiritual depth. Far from being either “petite” or strictly “solemn”, the Petite Messe Solennelle is a captivating blend of drama, lyricism, and heartfelt devotion, offering listeners a richly rewarding and unique musical experience.

Join WCFC and two other choirs of the Hampshire Choral Festival for an unforgettable evening as a talented line-up of vocal soloists, chorus, pianist and harmonium player breathe life into this extraordinary score. From the exquisite “Kyrie” to the jubilant “Gloria”, each movement unveils a new layer of emotional and musical intensity, combining operatic colour with sacred reverence. 🎉 Congratulations to our Musical Director, Barbara Höfling, on receiving a German-British Friendship Award! 🇩🇪🇬🇧

This special honour, presented by the German Ambassador, recognises Barbara’s exceptional contribution to strengthening UK–German friendship through her work with the German Choir in London.

Last year, WCFC had the wonderful privilege of singing together with the German choir in three cathedrals across the UK — celebrating music, collaboration and the strong bond between our two countries.

⭐️We welcome William Swinnerton ( bass ) who joins us tomorrow for our performance of Saint Saen’s Christmas Oratorio. 🎄

William Swinnerton is a baritone 🎵 from Hampshire, currently in his 3rd year of studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He completed his A-Levels at Peter Symonds College between 2021 and 2023, during which he was a Choral Scholar at Beaulieu Abbey, and a member of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain.

He is currently a Bass Layclerk at St Chad’s Cathedral, Birmingham, as well as Student Scholar with ExCathedra.

Soloist Spotlight 🌟 Caroline Carragher!

We’re delighted to welcome Caroline to sing 🎶 with us at tomorrow’s performance of Saint Saen’s Christmas Oratorio at St Paul’s Church, Wi******er.

Caroline studied with Dennis O’Neill and Nuccia Focile, having achieved her MA with distinction at Wales International Academy of Voice.

She made her company debut with Grange Park Opera in 2025 and appeared as alto soloist in Beethoven’s 9 th Symphony with St John’s Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Nigel Wilkinson

We can’t wait to hear her tomorrow!

🌟 Soloist Spotlight 🌟 Toshi Ogita (Tenor) We’re thrilled to welcome back tenor Toshi Ogita for tomorrow’s performance of Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël! 🎶✨
Toshi wowed us at our centenary concert in 2023 with his standout performance in Haydn’s Creation, and we can’t wait to hear him again.
A rising Japanese tenor known for his warm, lyrical voice, Toshi trained at the Royal Academy of Music and has worked with leading artists including Philippe Herreweghe, Rachel Podger, and John Butt. His stage work spans Mozart, Donizetti, Verdi, and more — and he’s a passionate recitalist and concert soloist.
We’re so excited to have him back on stage with us! 🌟🎵
