The Worthy Players

The Worthy Players is the amateur dramatic group for the Worthies area, producing two shows a year.

The Worthy Players is the amateur dramatic group for the Worthies in Wi******er, Hampshire. This includes Kings Worthy, Headbourne Worthy, Abbots Worthy and Martyr Worthy. Formed originally by members of the local Women’s Institute in 1973, the group has since performed over 130 shows including drama, comedy, pantomime, variety and old time music hall. We are made up of members of all ages, many o

f whom come from much further afield than the Worthies - so we are open to all-comers. The group meets in the Jubilee Hall, London Road, Kings Worthy (opposite the Volvo garage, near St. Mary’s Church) on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm. We are always on the lookout for new members, not just to act on stage but also to help with all the many other jobs backstage and front of house. Set building, painting, ticket selling, costume making and advertising are just some of the areas needing lots of effort, while on the dramatic side we need directors, musicians, choreographers and of course, actors! If you can contribute in any way then we would be delighted to welcome you in the Jubilee Hall at any of our meetings.

The Worthy Players are starting their December pantomime preparations with play-readings of 'Treasure Island' next week (11th & 12th August) at 7.30pm in the Jubilee Hall, Kings Worthy.

We're always keen to welcome new members whether as actors, set builders, costume makers, technical support or general helpers, so these occasions can be a great opportunity to pop along and meet this friendly and long-established group.

Last rehearsal before THIS WEEK's Radio Variety Show. An evening of fun, comedy sketches, culture (?!) and song,
All performed as if in a radio studio, with you in the seats of the studio audience.

Just a few days till we go 'Live On Air!'

The Worthy Players' 'Radio Variety Show' performs next Friday and Saturday, 10th & 11th July. The show combines a variety of over 20 short comedy sketches, songs and episodes of a 1950s-style thriller, just like those nostalgic days when 'Wireless' was King and everyone stopped to listen. In those heady days, artistes dressed smartly out of respect for their listening audiences.

An antidote to football !- have an evening of fun as a member of 'the studio audience' and be entertained at the Jubilee Hall in Kings Worthy for just £8 a ticket. Licensed Bar available.

The Radio Variety Show! Friday / Saturday 10th /11th July at 7.30pm in the Jubilee Hall Kings Worthy.
Just because the cast read from their scripts in a Radio Show, they still rehearse regularly to make sure they produce the best performances on the night.

They're out to squeeze every nuance of wit and fun from sketches like 'OMG, he knows!' and 'Last Meal at the Captain's Table' and topical wit from songs about the weather (a bit of wishful thinking here!). These together with exciting episodes of 'Dick Kings Barton (Special Agent)' make for an evening remembering how Radio was King in the great wireless days of Auntie BBC.
A great value evening out for just £8 a ticket and with the Bar and a raffle to round off the experience.

With just over three weeks to go, the Worthy Players' Radio Variety Show is something you won't want to miss!
These two performances are at 7.30pm on Friday/ Saturday, 10th / 11th July in the Jubilee Hall, Kings Worthy.

In between their two main productions, The Players keep activities rolling with a show that doesn't require a lot of line-learning, so the cast read from scripts in front of dummy microphones, dressed formally as they did in the good old days of 'Auntie' BBC, with YOU as the 'studio audience'. A Bar and Raffle just for good measure.

Avid followers of The Worthy Players are invited to join us for our annual Quiz evening at 7.30pm, Saturday 20th June.
Join us as a full team of up to six or as individuals to make up an 'open' table.
Challenge those grey cells in an atmosphere of fun and competition! 🤔 We do not have a bar that evening (our usual bar staff want to take part !), but do bring your own snacks and refreshments.

'Rumours' has got off to a great start and, by Night Two, the play was really fizzing, with audience and cast in perfect comedy harmony. Plenty of laughs in this Neil Simon classic.

Don't miss this great value night out with just two performances remaining - next Friday 24th and Saturday 25th at 7.30 in the Jubillee Hall, Kings Worthy. Enjoy the fun of the evening, with a bar and raffle to add to the high spirits!

Just two rehearsals to go before Neil Simon's great comedy, 'Rumours', opens at the Jubilee Hall, Kings Worthy on Friday, 17th April. And the Worthy Players are pleased to announce that it's going well, with the directors' choice of play being borne out with a script which made them laugh out loud on first reading.

'Charley and Vivian's wedding anniversary celebration seems to be happening without them, leading to the rumours of the play's title. But the guests' speculations and cover-ups for their hosts' absence become ever more farcical, made worse by the arrival of the police'.

Once again the Players manage to transform the Jubilee Hall stage into an appropriate setting for the production. Last year, a railway station waiting room; this year a sitting room with stairs, six exits and a window. Just the final decor left to apply.
