There’s a lot more to Abbey Mill than meets the eye 🤍
Beneath the building, the water still runs through the historic mill leat and sluices that once powered a working corn mill on this site.
Records of milling here stretch back to the Saxon period, with the mill later forming part of St Mary’s Abbey and helping support life within the monastery. The building we know today developed over centuries, with the present mill complex largely dating from the 18th century.
And although silk production later became part of the Abbey Mills story, it wasn’t where it all began. In 1796, a separate silk mill was built alongside the existing flour mill, sharing the same powerful water source.
More than 1,000 years later, that water is still flowing beneath Abbey Mill today.
