Opening day has arrived at The Arc, Wi******er, for The Scottish Colourists: Radical Perspectives, a major exhibition bringing the work of these four influential painters into focus.

Samuel John Peploe, John Duncan Fergusson, George Leslie Hunter and F.C.B. Cadell - known collectively as the Scottish Colourists - are shown alongside their European and British contemporaries for the first time in this context. Works by artists including André Derain, John Singer Sargent and members of the Bloomsbury Group sit in dialogue with the Colourists, revealing the vibrant networks of influence shaping early 20th-century modernism.

Across more than 50 works, the gallery presents a striking range of painting - from Impressionism and Fauvism through to wider modernist experimentation - united by fearless colour, expressive brushwork and a shared drive to reimagine the visual world.

Known for their luminous handling of colour and atmosphere, the Scottish Colourists are seen here in a new context that highlights the vitality and modernity of their work - particularly resonant in the light of summer.

Developed by The Fleming Collection, with additional loans from Tate, Perth & Kinross Council, Aberdeen Art Gallery, University of Hull Art Collection, Sheffield Museums, Southampton City Art Gallery and private lenders.

The exhibition runs until 16 September 2026.

Slow down and stitch something just for you ✂️
This freeform hand stitched quilting workshop is all about slowing things right down and getting creative with cloth. You’ll be guided through the basics of patchwork, learning how to cut, piece and hand quilt using a really relaxed, improvisational approach. No patterns, no measuring, just responding to colour, shape and texture as you go.

It’s perfect if you’ve been wanting to try quilting but weren’t sure where to start, or if you just fancy a calm, creative day making something completely your own. You’ll leave with a small finished textile piece and skills you can keep building on.

Monday 29 June, 10am to 4pm
