CDOs at the Brian Boru

CDOs at the Brian Boru Hi, we are Eva and Steph - The Cultural Development Officers at The Brian Boru Club, Ashton in Makerfield. Steph: Hi, I'm Steph.

It is our role to promote Irish Culture and Heritage at the club, which is officially the oldest Irish Club in the UK! Eva: Hi, I'm Eva and I have recently graduated from Manchester Met University with a degree in Fine Art and Art History. Ever since I was a baby, I have been doing Tudor re-enactments at Kentwell House in Suffolk, which I love! Every summer, I go to Kentwell and my role currently

is on the pottery area. I do have Irish heritage and 4 generations of my family have been members of the club for many year! When I saw the role advertised, I felt this was perfect for me as I am very much interested in heritage and I'm excited to for the plans we have for the heritage room. I've been in the education sector for 12 years, teaching RE and humanities in secondary schools and sixth form colleges. I left permanent teaching in December of 2024 (although I still do supply teaching and other things within the education sector) and I found myself drawn to the cultural and heritage sector. After a moment of madness in June 2025, I applied for a Masters degree in Museum Practice and Heritage Studies at Chester University. I never thought that I would go back to uni but I am loving it so far! Then the role came up for the Cultural Development Officer at the Brian Boru and I jumped at the chance as it is a very welcoming place to be!

☘️ Irish Recipe of the Month - Boxty ☘️

(well months as a one off for April and May!)

Boxty, the beloved Irish potato pancake, is a dish steeped in tradition and rural ingenuity. Originating in the northern counties of Ireland, particularly around Cavan, Leitrim, and Fermanagh, boxty was a clever way to make the most of the humble potato-grated raw and mixed with mashed potato, flour and buttermilk to create a hearty, satisfying meal. Its name is thought to come from the Irish phrase “arán bocht tí,” meaning “poor-house bread,” reflecting its roots as a staple of simple, resourceful cooking. Today, boxty remains a symbol of Irish culinary heritage, celebrated for its crisp exterior and soft, comforting centre -perfect for breakfast, brunch or any time you crave a taste of Ireland.

Ingredients
250g mashed potato
250g peeled, grated, raw rooster potato
250g plain flour
1 tsp baking soda
300ml buttermilk
6 spring onions, finely sliced (optional)
100g Irish cheddar cheese, grated (optional)
sea salt and ground black pepper
Butter, to fry

☘️ STATE YOUR INTEREST ☘️

After the success of our recent trip watching the Seven Drunken Nights, many of you have spoken to us about your interest in watching their Christmas show "Christmas in Ireland". Before we book the tickets and transport, we would like to have an idea of numbers. Please let us know either by replying to this post, private messaging or by adding your name to the interest form that will be on the notice board in the club over the weekend.

The show will be on Tuesday 24th November at Manchester Opera House at 7:30PM with plans to get the stall seats again and transport will be included. Estimated costs £50 (should the coach be full). We do not anticipate it to be much more and hopefully less!

Please find a summary below of the show 🙂.

Taken from the ATG website:

"Be transported to a magical Christmas Eve inside a traditional Irish pub, where friends, old and new, gather to share songs, stories and memories of Christmases gone by. As snow falls outside, the air fills with heartwarming renditions of timeless Irish classics, powerful ballads and all your favourite Christmas songs. From the producers of Seven Drunken Nights and performed live by an outstanding cast of musicians and singers, the show features hits like, ‘Driving Home For Christmas’, ‘Dirty Old Town’ and, of course, ‘Fairytale Of New York’."
