🎨⚽ St Wilf’s KS1 & KS2 Art Clubs ⚽🎨

This week we explored our World Cup Watercolours project, linking the excitement of the World Cup with the colourful artwork of Paul Klee. Using layers of soft, overlapping watercolours, our art clubbers created a beautiful mosaic of colour and pattern. The results were absolutely stunning!

I’m also putting together this project as a free classroom resource for teachers to use this term. Keep a lookout for more details coming soon 👀

Well done, St Wilf’s art clubbers! 🌍🎨✨

🌸 St Wilf’s KS2 Art Club 🌸

This week, we sketched beautiful orchids. We broke down those unusual shapes step by step, and everyone did amazingly well following the tutorial.

We then added watercolour, beginning with a demonstration before carefully applying techniques such as wet-on-wet and stippling to create those delicate blooms.

What a fantastic group. Lovely focus, lovely effort, and a lovely end to the week.

Well done, everyone! 🎨

🦛 SUNDAY ART CLUB: BUMPY 🦛

Sunday 28th June
11am at The Brocket Arms
All ages • all abilities • £9.50pp

This one is inspired by little Bumpy, the orphaned baby hippo recently rescued in Kenya and now being cared for by the incredible Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

For this Sunday Art Club, we’ll be drawing our own gorgeous little hippo from scratch, then layering up soft colour using pastels on toned paper.

As always, it will be fully guided step-by-step, suitable for complete beginners, and absolutely fine if yours turns out a little wonky. That will simply add more character to our beautiful Bumpy!

At Mino Art School, we’ve been completely bewitched by Sheldrick’s work rescuing elephants, rhinos and other wildlife, and Bumpy’s story has really stayed with us. We are big fans and have an adoptee baby elephant name Kipekee!

A third of tickets have already sold before our theme has been announced, which is amazing! Thank you for trusting these classes and the way we teach them.

Come for art, come for breakfast, come for lunch. The Brocket Arms is a fully accessible community venue, close to the town centre, with parking on site, wheelchair access and full step-free access.

🐸 Sunday Art Club – Froggies! 🐸

We gathered at 11am on Sunday, pencils at the ready, and sketched step-by-step following the tutorial, our frogs.

As we usually do, we have an image ready, but we take it line by line as a group so we can get the scale and proportions a good size, no one’s left behind!

After that, we had a quick watercolour demonstration - watching and discussing the techniques, and this is when we could relax into the painting side.

And what an army of frogs! We had some cheeky characters in there, some big daddies and some little Kermits. Obviously the best thing was that everyone was completely different, from the drawing through to the painting.

There’s a huge sense of satisfaction when you’ve drawn something from scratch. You’re not only creating a unique piece of work, you’re also learning and developing your skills and, ultimately, giving yourself a massive art confidence boost.

I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t appreciate the worth of drawing their own work, even if it’s not perfect, and rightly so.

Huge well done to everyone, for being brave enough to draw in a group in a short amount of time and then paint, not knowing how it’s going to turn out and often having no experience 🥰

We’re back at the Brocket in two weeks on 28th June. Tickets are ready. A theme yet to be decided!
£9.50 pp All ages.

💙🧡 Happy Birthday Edwin!! 💛💚

🎨 A very special birthday Arty Party in the Mino Studio!

Lots of laughter, music, dancing and creativity as Edwin celebrated with friends and had the studio all to themselves! 🎉

Watercolours, acrylics, embellishments on stretched canvas and plenty of individuality! 🏡 Edwin chose a colourful little house design for his painting.

🎂 We hope you had a brilliant day, Edwin!

Private Arty Parties in the Mino Studio available for groups as small as 4 to around 8–10 artists 😊

⚽ 🩵🩷World Cup Watercolours!! 💚❤️⚽

Saturday Art Club in the Mino studio was all about celebrating the World Cup. We did it in the style of the artist Paul Klee, geometric patterns in multiple shades of watercolours to give the shimmering effect of the pitch, and then the multicoloured flags all around the side.

Also, a very special Happy Birthday to our art student Arthur! It’s his actual birthday today and he came along to our club armed with boxes of cupcakes for everyone! 🧁🎂

So wonderful Happy Birthday to Arthur, who’s got a big party coming up tomorrow with all his class mates, and we hope you all have a fabulous time! 🎉🥳👏

David Hockney 9th July 1937 -11th June 2026
88 years old,

I first encountered David Hockney’s work as a 15-year-old in 1989, standing in front of A Bigger Splash at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool on a school trip, it was on loan from the Tate.

There was something about that work that was so different, we bought postcards in the shop and stuck them in our daler rowney a5 sketchbooks, as you do. And from that moment I was hooked.

Every half decade, his work changed. For me, it was the theatre sets he created, the pattern and the mark-making, those rich oil colours. And the photo montages of the road trip - those were amazing. I studied his work at university, I studied him in teacher training, and his work formed the basis of so many projects I’ve taught to children over the years in so many different media and still does.

I’ve taken students to Saltaire to see the iPad drawings. Huge prints. He never stopped working. He never stopped experimenting, and he never stopped being enthralled by the world. That curious mind never faded.

Garrowby Hill is one of my favourite paintings. If you’ve ever driven through Yorkshire, you’ll know those winding roads, the patterns in the fields, and that blue-turquoise haze mixed with the green and the light. He captured it so well.

David Hockney gave the world so much. He gave generations of artists, teachers and students so much. He was the original trail blazer. Described as Britains best loved artist. He was.

He will be greatly missed ❤️

These students have been working hard all week in class - they come to art club and are asked to draw a whippet portrait in profile, get the proportions in the right place, and blend colours in around 45 minutes?!

No tracing or colouring in. Only drawing from scratch following the tutorial. And they did just that 🤩🤩🤩

A round of applause for the amazing KS2 Art Club. Loads of character, unique drawings, learning about scale, composition, angles, blending colours and mark making. Absolutely spot on 🥰

A huge well done, everyone. You are superstars!
