🔥Investing In Our Skills & Future🔥

This week, five Wick Players members are heading south to Glasgow to take part in a Pyrotechnics Safety Awareness Course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland which is one of the country’s leading institutions for education in the performing arts, covering everything from acting and musical theatre to production, technical theatre and stagecraft.

For anyone wondering what pyrotechnics actually are, they’re the controlled special effects used on stage to create things like flashes, sparks, bangs, smoke and other dramatic effects. They can add a huge amount of atmosphere and impact to a production.

As a club, we’re always looking for ways to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence of our members, and this is another important step in strengthening the experience we have within Wick Players.

By investing in specialist training like this, we’re increasing what we can safely achieve in future productions, giving us more in-house knowledge and even more opportunities to create memorable moments on stage for our audiences.

We’re delighted to be able to fund this training for the boys and look forward to seeing the benefits it brings to Wick Players for many productions to come ✨

Mackays have been long-standing supporters of the club, and we were absolutely delighted to have them on board as our Main Sponsor for our very first full-scale musical.

🐾 A Special Thank You to Our Toto 🐾

We couldn’t possibly look back on “The Wizard of Oz” without giving a very special mention to one of the smallest. and quite possibly most popular members of our cast… Gaira, our wonderful Toto!

Gaira (Owned by Fiona Cormack) made her stage debut with us in “The Wizard of Oz” at the start of this month and what a debut it was.

From trotting alongside Dorothy to making her perfectly timed entrances and exits, Gaira quickly became a firm favourite with our cast, crew and audiences. She took everything in her stride and was an absolute little star from beginning to end.

She also made a little bit of Wick Players history along the way, becoming the first live animal ever to appear in a Wick Players production!

Fun Facts About Gaira…
🐶 She is a six-year-old Scottish Terrier.
🐶 She originally came from Aberdeenshire.
🐶 She is the youngest of eight siblings.
🐶 “The Wizard of Oz” was her first ever stage appearance.
🐶 She loves cold-water swimming, playing football and sleeping in patches of sunlight.
🐶 Her name is pronounced like “Sarah” with a G.
🐶 Most of Fiona’s family (literally about half the auditorium!) came to watch Gaira make her stage debut in the production.

A huge thank you must also go to Fiona Cormack, Gaira’s proud owner and a valued member of our wardrobe team, for trusting us with her little star and for all the care that went into making sure Gaira was happy and comfortable throughout the production.

We would also like to thank Abbie at AEG Services, who proudly supported Gaira’s appearance and backstage care during the show.

Dorothy may have had the ruby slippers, but Gaira definitely had the audience wrapped around her little paw every night.

Thank you, Gaira, for being the perfect Toto and for becoming such a special part of the Wick Players family.

As we bring an incredibly busy year to a close, we wanted to provide an update on our plans for the remainder of 2026.

We had originally hoped to present a one-act play as part of an evening of community drama, alongside two other smaller productions. Unfortunately, we were unable to complete the casting process for the main one-act play, and therefore the proposed show will no longer be going ahead.

Following the scale and commitment involved in our recent production of “The Wizard of Oz”, Wick Players’ first full-scale musical, the Board of Directors have taken the decision to take a well-earned break for the remainder of the year.

This gives our members and production teams an opportunity to take a well-deserved break following an exceptionally busy period, while also allowing us the time to properly prepare for an exciting programme of activity in 2027.

There is already plenty happening behind the scenes, with a number of projects and productions in the early planning stages and we look forward to sharing further details with you in due course.

In the meantime, don’t forget to come along to support us at our Open Meeting & AGM on Wednesday 7th October at 7pm.
