Fellow magpies… ✨

Creative Fridays are back!

This week marks the start of our 4-week block: Tiny Treasures — a playful exploration of small things, curious finds and the magic of making.

This course might be for you if you…

✨ Fill your pockets with shiny sea glass, unusual rocks and fallen feathers
✨ Believe that small worlds can be big worlds
✨ Have a sense of wonder
✨ Love going down rabbit holes
✨ Enjoy the process just as much as the finished piece

If this sounds like you, and you’d like to spend a few Fridays making tiny treasures with us, we have sessions on Friday mornings and Friday evenings.

Clay was out at Pearey House yesterday, volunteering and working alongside people with visual impairments.

It was my first time working in this capacity, and definitely won’t be my last. It was also really lovely to work alongside my lovely mam, who is partially sighted herself.

I found it especially interesting to see how other senses come into play when engaging with art and making. It was a real reminder that the arts should be accessible to everyone, and that there’s so much for me to learn about how we can make that happen.

I’m only at the beginning of understanding this area, but I came away feeling encouraged by what I can contribute and really looking forward to doing more work like this. ☺️☺️

So this is what we’ll be making in our first week back to Creative Fridays… a little honesty box.

Using honesty (lunaria) seed pods as tiny frames for words we randomly stumble across in old books and magazines.

Take the last card - last night I felt a little creatively demotivated (it happens), then randomly came across the words ‘devoid of imagination.’ I carefully tore out the inside of a seed pod and framed them — so, rather ironically, even my lack of imagination became a source for making something.

I know this kind of thing won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s fine. It’s simply a gentle way to create without much intention, follow what you find, and escape the hive mind for a little while… ☺️☺️

There’s been a couple of last min cancellations so if anyone wants a space to create either Fri mornings (11.30-1) or evenings (5.30-7) then just drop a message to [email protected]

Friday creative sessions are returning this week, & I’ve been gathering a few things in preparation for our upcoming Tiny Treasures project…

One of them is annual honesty.
It’s been mindful simply noticing where these plants crop up, watching them change & developing the patience (not my strong point) to pick them only when they’re ready — turning from green, to strawberry pink, and finally to papery tan when their seeds are ready to fall.

Picking and peeling have become part of the creative process itself—and the peeling is surprisingly therapeutic, a bit like peeling dried PVA glue off your fingers!

For this block, I’m keen to bring more found objects & nature into our making — paying attention to the small, overlooked things around us & seeing what they might become in our hands.

And these delicate little honesty treasures have a part to play…

I’ll reveal what we’re going to be doing with them tomorrow. ✨

Thursday classes — harmonious boat scenes, works in progress ⛵️🎨

We’re not quite finished with boats yet though! This Monday and Thursday, weather permitting, we’ll be heading out to Seaton Sluice Harbour for a plein-air sketching session — working directly from the landscape & capturing the real movement of the harbour, changing light, weather, reflections and atmosphere as we see it.

If you’re enjoying what we’ve been doing, I’ve just released another four-week block of classes.

For Weeks 1–3, we’ll continue looking at different types of boats, with plenty of artist and photographer inspiration to help us explore composition, colour, light & atmosphere in our paintings.

Then for Week 4, fingers crossed for the weather 🤞, we’ll head outdoors again for another plein-air session — this time at Cullercoats Harbour.

Lots more boats, paint and coastal inspiration to come! Opportunities to switch between days too if you’re struggling attend each week.

*Suitable for all abilities *Non-judgemental, friendly, welcoming class!

No screens, no distractions — just us, our curiosity and a shared sense of wonder…

Caregivers & children exploring the Brierdene together, noticing what’s growing, crawling and hiding all around us.

Hawthorn, elder, silverw**d, pineapple w**d (our favourite), oak, white dead-nettle (not a real nettle), ragwort, mallow, blackthorn, willow, yarrow, ash keys, sycamore helicopters, ferns, wild carrot, rowan, dock, shield bugs… and the list could have gone on and on.

So much to discover. So much learning happening naturally — through wandering, wondering, noticing and sharing.

Freedom, connection and a little bit of awe at just how much there is to find when we slow down and look. 🌿💚

Back for the October half-term — Tuesday 27th, 10–11.45am. I’ll set up an event with all the details soon.

And if there’s enough interest, we’re also thinking about starting a nature journaling group — creatively noticing and recording the seasonal changes in the Dene as the year unfolds. 🌿🍂✏️

For now, drop me an email if you’d like to be kept informed. 🌿
