St Oswald's Chamber Music

St Oswald's Chamber Music A series of chamber music concerts in the beautiful and atmospheric setting of St Oswald's Church.

28/07/2025

After a long break without any concerts, local chamber choir the Tuesday Singers are giving a concert in St Oswald's on Monday 4th August at 7pm as the culmination of a long weekend's exhibition 'Characters of Lythe'.
The concert has a very wide-ranging programme, so much so that it is titled 'From the sublime to the ridiculous' - some supremely beautiful music with quite a bit of comic fun! Four of the choir who are also part of the St Oswald's congregation will give a couple of numbers as solo items.
If you want to see the exhibition of local history it is open from Saturday 2nd August to Monday 4th August from 11am to 4pm daily. You will be able to buy delicious cream teas on all three days and there will be a home-baked cakes stall on Saturday.

Thinking about next year's Chamber Music concerts in St Oswald's. They have always been Saturday evenings starting at 7pm - is this the best time (or even the best day) for people. Would a Saturday or Sunday afternoon suit better? I would be very interested to hear your views.

Rehearsing hard for our concert on July 6th. We took a little bit of time out to try to get an artistic picture for the poster - what do you think?

At last I can bring you news of the first concert in the 2024 St Oswald's Chamber Music series! The St Hilda's Quartet, comprising Martin Hall, Liz Hydes, Stephen Restorick and me are coming to open the season with one of Mozart's Prussian quartets, k575 in D. The quartet will then be joined by James Lloyd and Rachel Emerson (french horn) to play Beethoven's Sextet for two horns and string quartet. After the interval the strings will finish the evening with Schubert's E flat quartet opus 125 no 1.
No change in the entry charge of £7 which includes a complimentary glass of wine or fruit juice. Come and join us, and tell your friends!

Although the chamber music concerts at St Oswald's have finished for 2023, there is still great music to be heard in Whitby. Hardly chamber music, but the St Hilda's Festival Chorus and Orchestra are putting on Haydn's stupendous oratorio Creation at 7pm on Saturday 11th November in St Hilda's Anglican Church on the West Cliff in Whitby. This promises to be an excellent evening so why not come along?

The next concert in the 2023 Chamber Music series here at St Oswald's is the visit of the St Hilda's String Quintet with guest James Lloyd on french horn on Saturday 16th September at 7pm.
The original quartet of Martin Hall, Ellie Whitehead, Stephen Restorick and me had to be changed slightly when Martin was quite badly injured falling off his bike, and we welcomed Liz Hydes while Martin recuperated. He is largely recovered now (although not completely) and we decided to expand to include Liz as a permanent member, which also increases our flexibility as she plays violin as well as her main instrument, viola. Hence 'Quintet' not 'Quartet'.
The programme will start with the first movement of Beethoven's transcription of his piano trio opus 1 no. 3, a glorious quintet opus 104. This is followed by Mozart's quintet for french horn, violin, two violas and cello, KV 407, and we welcome James Lloyd to play the horn while Martin sits this one out. After the interval the string quintet will play Mozart's gorgeous KV 515 in C.
Do try to get to this one, and tell your friends so they can come too - it should be a lovely evening.

The programme ranges from Mozart to Albeniz, with Puccini, Elgar and Dowland thrown in for good measure.

I've managed to arrange three more concerts at St Oswald's in this year's series.
The first of these is on Monday 17th July (a bit different, but I hope that you'll still manage to come) with a concert by the Tuesday Singers, a local chamber choir who have proved popular in the past. The concert is titled 'Songs for Summer' and will bring an enormously wide range of songs, from the 17th century right up to the Beatles and David Bowie - surely something for everyone to enjoy. The usual routine - the concert starts at 7pm, tickets £7 with a complimentary glass of wine or fruit juice.
The other two for your diary are Saturday 5th August (St Oswald's Day) with a concert from four members of the Moorland Ensemble plus a couple of guests.
Saturday 16th September brings members of the St Hilda's Quartet and guests to play to glorious pieces of Mozart - the Horn Quintet with James Lloyd, and the String Quintet k515.
Keep the dates free!

Not specifically chamber music, but you might be interested to hear local choir the Tuesday Singers at St Oswald's, Lythe tomorrow night (Wednesday 5th April) 7pm with 'A Meditation for Holy Week', and evening of readings of the story of Holy Week right up to the Crucifixion, interspersed with beautiful and appropriate music from the choir.
There is no entry fee but there will be a retiring collection in aid of the Whitby Food Bank.
Do come along if you can, I think you will find it a very moving evening.

Since the pandemic it has been a bit challenging organising a full season of chamber music at St Oswald's, but I am delighted to be able to tell you that the St Hilda's String Quartet is going to give a concert on Saturday 15th April starting at 7pm.
The programme starts with two classical quartets, K160 by Mozart and opus 20 no 4 by Haydn, then after the interval there will be range of lighter pieces which will show off the versatility of the string quartet genre!
Tickets are £7 each which includes refreshments at the interval.
Following this we are hoping to be able to announce some very exciting news about Sunday 14th May.
