Dear friends,
It is with a great deal of sadness and frustration that I inform you of the council’s latest decisions.
In February, I had a meeting with the council’s assistant clerk and the new resort officer. I was led to believe that this season would carry on as usual until the elections in May go through, at which point they will inform me of their decisions for the new way to go forward with the snails’ ride on the beach. At that meeting I asked to see the copy of the latest survey which was carried out for the new vision of what would happen on the beach. I am still waiting for this.
As the summer season progressed, I have been patient and waited for the council to gather themselves. To my great disappointment they sent me a PowerPoint presentation of what they would like to do, i.e. reunite 3 attraction sites into one, with no real scope for the snails’ ride apart from staying where it was most recently, site A6. Still yet to be confirmed.
Last year I made general enquiries to stay on the beach year around, I did talk with the Purbeck Motocross association and Weymouth Lyons association (organisers of the October motocross event) to see if the site A 6 (where the snails have been relocated) would be an issue for the event to run, to my great satisfaction they were on board and they did not see any objection or issues for the snails to stay on the beach, with the provision that they obviously not run during their event (for security and safety reasons).
In February I mentioned this to the assistant clerk and resort officer, to which they said that it would need planning approval form Dorset County Council, and I was looking forward to further discuss this opportunity with them.
Now the season has finished, and I received no update from the council’s team and representatives until an email at the end of November to inform me that they had put a planning application in place for a site encompassing A3, A4 and A5 into one main site, with the A6 to move to the left of the sand mans site to allow an Observation wheel all year round. And there is no mention of the snail ride.
So, I ask you to please help me object to this council planning. It seems like they just do what they want, ignoring the existing trade and a showing little care for the existing relationships. The snail ride was manufactured for Weymouth, at the demand of the Dorset council to bring a mechanical ride for all small children to enjoy and it has done so for the last 25 years. Just like that the Weymouth Town council decide to wipe out the snail ride the last 2 generations have enjoyed without constructive discussion. The couple of surveys Weymouth Town Council carried out have not been made public, nor has the decision making process that has led to such sudden and drastic change that will impact the existing landscape of the beach.
A few days ago, information was published on the Dorset Echo regarding this new planning application which has already received some opposition, including from Historical England, who have opposed to the observation wheel, that offers nothing of historical significance, and at 25 meters high you barely see the Nothe fort.
So, if like me, you feel you the council is not doing the right thing and in complete disregard of the existing businesses and attractions, as well as the heritage of Weymouth traditional seafront, please leave your comments and object to such changes on the beach.
I am attaching a link to the planning application, objections to be made before 20th of December 2024, please.
Thanking everyone for their support, please share this as much as you can.
