I’m so sad to hear about David Hockney’s death. He was such a prolific and dedicated artist, an innovator and a source of inspiration throughout my life. I remember reading about his set designs in the Observer magazine as a child, I wrote about his joiner photographs in my degree dissertation, loved his printmaking, his joy in using new technology with his iPad drawings, his work celebrating nature… I could go on.

This etching “The Light Seekers” features a wonderful row of oak trees in Abinger Roughs, a beautiful stretch of National Trust owned woodland near where I live in the Surrey Hills. I love how they are reaching out for the sunlight, almost forming a tunnel to walk through.
You can see this etching in my Open Studio this summer.
I’m opening from 11-5 on these dates:
Saturday 6th June
Sunday 7th June
Wednesday 10th June
Friday 12th June

Open Studios has given me an opportunity to put all my recent work together and reflect on where I am heading with it. The last few years I have been looking more and more at trees and the landscape where nature is reclaiming places abandoned by people. I have many more ideas to build on this body of work and I am excited about my next steps. I am currently planning an etching of Judge Wyndham’s Oak in Dorset. I’m working on the preparatory drawing between visitors to my studio, although there was such a steady stream today there was very little time to pick up a pencil!

I’m having a couple of quiet days now and reopen my studio on Wednesday, then on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11-5. Do come and visit, I’m studio 45 in the SAOS catalogue. Link in bio.

The Crouch Oak, Addlestone is thought to be 1000 years old. It is right next to a busy road. I find spending time looking at such an ancient tree helps put the madness of the world into a little perspective.

As well as seeing lots of framed and unframed work at my open studio you are welcome to sit in my studio window seat and flick through my sketchbooks, look at my materials and printmaking tools, ask questions about the processes I use, look at my collection of art books and possibly enjoy a slice of homemade cake as well (no photo of that as I haven’t baked it yet!). I’m always happy to talk about printmaking and I will be doing a few demos as well.
I will be open from 11-5 on these dates:
Saturday 6th June
Sunday 7th June
Wednesday 10th June
Friday 12th June

A somewhat overworked sketchbook painting of an amazing oak tree I saw in Cumbria last month. The wall appears to have been built to fit under the long branch which stretches out to the right.
