Nicholas Turner’s work is prompted by both imagination and observed images to invoke a sense of reflection and romanticism. It is the process of organising colour relationships and compositional design that fascinates Turner, whether working with themes based on landscapes or still life. His paintings show the influences of Pointilism, French Impressionists and Modern British painters such as Julian Trevelyan.

Nicholas Turner has exhibited widely in the UK and in Europe, with his work now included in many public collections, including the Royal Collection, the permanent collection of the RWA and that of the Marquis of Bath, as well as many private collections across the UK, Japan, USA, Italy, and Israel.

To accompany her textile works in ‘Where Threads Meet’ alongside Cathy Snelling, .loveday.art is exhibiting a series of 12 paintings. These playful works reflect both her love of folk art and a personal desire to create freely and intuitively, unburdened by expectation.

Elizabeth’s paintings echo the spirit of her textiles while standing as joyful works in their own right.

All works can be viewed in the gallery until Saturday 30 May, or online via our website.

The gallery is open Wednesday-Saturday from 10-5 (other times by appointment) until 30 May

Rooted in traditional craft techniques, ‘Where Threads Meet’ brings the two artists into a spirited dialogue where material and form spark off one another with warmth and wit.

At the heart of the exhibition is storytelling. Both Elizabeth Loveday and Cathy Snelling create imagined worlds populated by curious characters, full of narrative and playful symbolism. Their works invite viewers to piece together stories that feel at once personal and fantastical. Through joyful experimentation and a shared sense of imagination and improvisation, the exhibition reveals harmony and contrast between the two artists.

Cathy Snelling grew up in Somerset and from a young age was making characters out of recycled boxes, fabric and trinkets.

Infusing inanimate objects with personality and humour, her works draw inspiration from archaeological relics, myths, and ancient customs and puppetry. Cathy’s passion for sewing is evident in her preference for hand stitching, a process that not only calms her mind but also allows her to delve into the hidden layers of everyday life.

Her work involves using vintage fabrics and left-behind sewing memorabilia. By creating individual items that are ultimately drawn together to form a final piece with multiple layers and hidden characters, it invokes a metaphor for trying to fit into the world — a theme that subtly influences her work throughout.

Cathy is an avid collector of vintage fabrics and accessories, such as buttons, pincushions, and thread, which she treasures as valuable elements of her creative process.

Alongside her artistic practice, Cathy Snelling has worked as a model-maker, costume-maker and rigger along with puppet maintenance for films that include Chicken Run, The House, Fantastic Mr Fox, Fireman Sam, Shaun the Sheep and The Koala Brothers for clients including Aardman, 3 Mills Studios and Nexus Studios.
