We are delighted to announce the appointment of Harvey Brink as our new Principal Conductor, starting in September. He will lead his first public concert with the orchestra on 15th November.

Harvey is Deputy Director of Music at Wells Cathedral School, where he regularly conducts the student Symphony Orchestra. He brings a wealth of conducting and leadership experience, a wide repertoire, and an infectious enthusiasm for making music in the community.

Speaking about his appointment, Harvey said:

"I am thrilled to be joining the Mid-Somerset Orchestra as Principal Conductor. Having already been associated with the orchestra through my role at Wells Cathedral School, I know what a welcoming and committed musical community it is. I'm looking forward to starting work with the musicians in September and sharing great performances with our audiences in Somerset."

We are excited to begin this new chapter with Harvey and look forward to welcoming audiences to his inaugural concert, our Family Matinee on Sunday 15th November at 3pm in Strode Theatre.

As we bring the 2025-26 concert season to a close with our performance on Saturday 4 July, we also mark our final concert with MSO Principal Conductor Hitoshi Suzuki.

Since joining the orchestra in 2018, Hitoshi has brought energy, enthusiasm and insight to every rehearsal and performance. His passion for music, attention to detail and ability to bring out the best in our players have made him greatly appreciated by both the orchestra and our audiences.

His commitment has been remarkable. Every week, Hitoshi has travelled from mainland Europe to rehearse with the orchestra, demonstrating an exceptional dedication to making music for our audience in Somerset.

We would like to thank Hitoshi for his leadership, musicianship and commitment over the past eight years, and wish him every success for the future.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has supported the Mid-Somerset Orchestra and shared this musical journey with us. We look forward to welcoming you to our final concert of the season on Saturday.

Did you know that Borodin's Overture to Prince Igor is one of the great hidden gems of the orchestral repertoire?

Packed with lovely tunes, sparkling orchestration and relentless energy, it's a thrilling curtain-raiser to our Summer Concert. However, it doesn't appear nearly as often in the concert hall as it deserves, so this is a wonderful chance to hear it live.

And think of it as a taster, because we'll be returning to Borodin's epic world of Prince Igor next season with more music from this magnificent opera.

Join us to discover why this neglected masterpiece deserves a place alongside the most famous concert overtures.

Meet Harry Jordan, our brilliant soloist in the Elgar Cello Concerto. Harry was a student at Wells Cathedral School, and is now at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music. Come and hear the performance on 4th July at Strode Theatre!

Straight back to work this evening in rehearsal for our summer concert on 4th July, and the music is starting to take shape!

Elgar’s Cello Concerto was written just after World War I and is often heard as a farewell to the old Romantic world, while Borodin and Schumann’s music bursts with optimism, folklore and sweeping landscapes. This programme offers a fascinating contrast of passion, nostalgia and historic national character.
