Accompanist for Wellington Choral Society (Somerset)

Wellington Choral Society is looking to appoint an accompanist for the beginning of the September 2026 season. The choir normally rehearses on Wednesday evenings, 7.30-9.30pm in Wellington, Somerset. There are typically 10-12 rehearsals in each of the Autumn and Spring terms (September to end November then January to end March), as well as occasional one-off rehearsals in the Summer (currently 1-2).

We currently pay £60 per rehearsal, and will consider candidates who are interested in working on a freelance/job share basis.

Expressions of interest will be considered until 30 June 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to work with the choir in the autumn.

About you
We’re looking to work with a collaborative accompanist to work with our Music Director. You will be confident in accompanying the choir from the orchestral reduction in the vocal score (see below for typical works), with the need to be able to read the chorus parts from open score as required.

There may also be opportunities for additional paid work for the right candidate including leading full/sectional rehearsals, and playing in the concert on continuo/piano/organ as appropriate. We’re happy for you to arrange deputies as required (by agreement with the Music Director).

About the choir

Wellington Choral Society is usually made up of between 50 and 80 members, and performs a range of works, usually drawn from the core oratorio repertoire. The choir has been directed by Laurence Blyth since 2011. Recent performances have included Mozart Requiem, Mendelssohn Elijah, Bach St John Passion, Britten St Nicolas and part 1 of Handel Messiah.

A throwback to the old Sing For Somerset services at Wells Cathedral.

Members of WCS, Taunton Choral Society and others used to join with the The Mid-Somerset Orchestra for a fundraising carol service in aid of Somerset community Foundation, and then NSPCC.

It was many people’s “start of Christmas” and wa a rare chance to hear all the Christmas favourites by Willcocks, Rutter et al with their orchestral accompaniment.
