The idea of URC Productions came about in response for ways to raise money towards the United Reformed Church, Wellingborough. The Church pays a contribution towards the Ministry to the National Church, as well as covering all of the regular household utility bills, and with two buildings this creates a challenge.
I suggested that the Church would make for a great theatrical venue, and by producing shows ourselves we could include both people that enjoy participating in Amateur Dramatics, and the wider community.
URC Productions was created in late 2013, and we performed our first production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in April 2014 to great reviews. As a result we are back again this year, performing Chess the Musical.
Chess is a musical with lyrics by Tim Rice, and music by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, formerly of ABBA. The story involves a romantic triangle between two top players, an American and a Russian, in a world chess championship, and a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other; all in the context of a Cold War struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union, during which both countries wanted to win international chess tournaments for propaganda purposes. The first theatrical production of Chess opened in London’s West End in 1986 and played for three years.
We have an outstanding cast featuring some very experienced local performers such as; Jonathan Reynolds, Ian Hammond-Stark, Leisa Cooke, Jake Douglas, Martin Grover, and Kim Hammond-Stark. Supported by our main ensemble, 8 trained dancers, and a show choir, it is a powerhouse of a production not to be missed.
Chess the Musical runs from Thursday 11th June to Saturday 13th June with performances at 7.30pm, at the United Reformed Church, High Street, Wellingborough.
Tickets are just £10 and can be reserved by calling 07799 821174, or can be purchased through the Church Office in Salem Hall, or at any Sunday morning service. Tickets can also be paid for and collected by visiting the Church any Monday or Thursday evening between 7.45pm and 9.15pm.
Don't miss out on this fantastic production, book your tickets today!
