This feature length documentary shines a light on the trailblazing role of women war artists, on the front lines round the world.

Artists featured includes acclaimed local artist Rachel Reckitt's 2nd World War work and interview with her niece, the author Penelope Lively. ⁠

💫 COMING SOON: ‘Outfall’ - a new solo exhibition by Bryony Gillard 💦⁠

We are very excited about our upcoming exhibition by artist and researcher Bryony Gillard, which opens at East Quay on Saturday 19th September. 🗓️ ⁠
⁠
The exhibition brings together moving-image, sound, and sculpture, inviting us to reconsider the unseen water infrastructure that shapes everyday life and the environmental consequences flowing beneath the surface. ⁠
⁠
Drawing attention to the often invisible materials carried through our pipes, sewers, bodies, and waterways, 'Outfall' arrives at a critical moment in the debate and public conversation around water infrastructure in the UK. Through a series of layered narratives, the show investigates these systems, from leak-detection dogs trained to locate failures in water infrastructure to plumbers navigating the physical labour of maintaining water systems. ⁠

Bryony's work reveals wastewater as more than a by-product of modern life. Instead, it emerges as an archive containing traces of illness, pharmaceuticals, hormones, industrial residues, and everyday human activity. ⁠

Join us from 6pm on Saturday 19th September, to celebrate the opening of our two new exhibitions at East Quay this Autumn! ⁠
⁠
Gallery 1 will be filled with artworks by over 50 artists, each exploring the theme of 'Joy'. Whilst upstairs in Gallery 2, we'll be debuting a new video installation by artist and researcher Bryony Gillard , titled 'Outfall'. 🎉⁠

And that's not all! We will also be marking East Quay's 5th birthday (HOORAY!) and the start of this year's Somerset Art Weeks Festival ... so there's loads to explore all around the building! 🎨⁠

Wow - what a busy summer holiday we’ve had! ☀️

But it’s not over yet, and we still have some last-minute availability in our unique on-site accommodation pods. So if you’re looking for a getaway, why not come and stay with us at East Quay? ✨

Here’s a short introduction to each pod:

🪞 Pod 1: Vintage finds and gathered belongings from Watchet - a living museum full of character and stories.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Pod 2: Our largest pod with two double beds, perfect for families or getaways with friends, with walls etched with legends of Watchet's past.
🌊 Pod 3: Our most romantic pod, with decor inspired by Watchet's maritime history, plus a bathtub with sweeping views of the sea!
🌈 Pod 4: Our most playful pod, with a rainbow bathroom and a cargo net to lounge on.
🚂 Pod 5: Periodically redecorated - this time styled by Carlos Peñalver, featuring excellent views of the West Somerset Railway.

From Watchet, you can access gorgeous walks on Exmoor and the Quantocks, with Dunster and Minehead only a short journey away. Plus, Watchet itself has so much to offer and explore, from excellent pubs, museums, and galleries, to great food. 🎨

East Quay has an on-site Kitchen serving delicious Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-inspired food. Open every day for breakfast (9am - 11am) and lunch (12pm - 3pm), plus dinner on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings 🍷

🌟 LAST CHANCE TO SEE!! 🌟⁠

We can't believe it's the final week of Poulomi Basu's solo show 'Always Coming Home', on display at East Quay until Monday 31st August.⁠
⁠
Spanning both gallery spaces at East Quay, the exhibition brings together moving image, sculptural installation, and photography. Poulomi's work explores migration, systems of power, and their impact on the body, particularly brown bodies, within an increasingly volatile world. Central to the exhibition are Poulomi's own experiences as an immigrant to the UK, reflecting on displacement and the psychological and emotional consequences of leaving one’s home due to conflict, violence, and political instability.⁠
⁠
The exhibition also includes a selection of existing works alongside pieces from Poulomi's series Sisters of the Moon, developed in partnership with WaterAid. Shot in Iceland, these self-portraits depict the artist in stark, dystopian landscapes devoid of water and life. The series critiques patriarchal and capitalist systems, imagining a future shaped by environmental collapse and the oppression of women. Through this work, Basu addresses gender-based violence, systemic inequality, and issues surrounding access to water, sanitation, and menstrual health.⁠

📢 There's not long left to explore our current exhibition in Studio 10 Project Space: "What makes you happy?" by local school students 🌟⁠

Bursting with colour, fun and energy, the exhibition brings together artworks made by over 1,000 local students, from Pre-school through to Year 9 (ages 3 to 14). The works include a whole range of ideas and inspirations, including depictions of trees, streams, mountains and coastal sunsets, to reading and playing football in the mud. Not to mention beloved bunny rabbits, guinea pigs, cats and dogs, and plenty of fun times spent with family and friends, on holiday and at home.⁠
