‘Last week in Lincoln
I had a wobble
‘My time on the rope is borrowed’
The stonework and the people
Looked equally deceitful
My eyes had a brief close
A murmur from below rose’

This month, in the lead up to the ‘Durham, Come Save Me’ album launch, I’ll be sharing some of the ideas and sketches that led to the final design of the album artwork.

Most of these are me just getting ideas out of my head and onto the page, so expect extremely loose, quick drawings that haven’t been polished very much, if at all.

Today’s sketch’s were inspired by the song ‘A Tightrope Walker Falls to Their Death in 1237’

At first look, this looks like the first real introduction to Hob, the tightrope walker. In reality, this is me trying to work the scene into a satisfying composition making the cathedral look large and looming without making Hob, the main character of the scene, look too small.

I didn’t quite resolve it in this section of the sketchbook but I got to use a new technique to make the cathedral tower look correct in perspective from an angle that you don’t have access too.

Lads had dogs, me the quarry
In my 40’s it started
Quite frightening and shocking
I fought it until I was sixty
Argued back, let those bastards itch me’

In the early days of this project, when I was still gathering ideas, my mate Helen said we could visit Edmundbuyers church on the way home.

Now Edmundbuyers Church is where Elizabeth Lee, the last person to be tried as a witch in the north east of England, is laid to rest. At this point I had no idea Elizabeth Lee would become the face of the album.

It was already misty when we left Ryton on a December Sunday afternoon. It got thicker and foggier as we were driving through the hills. It was a shame that we couldn’t really see Derwent Reservoir but that wasn’t important, we were on the way to meet a witch.

Once we got to the church, the fog was so close, any background sound couldn’t pe*****te through. It was eerily quiet, as though someone was setting the scene for us.

The gates for the church ground were shut, so we let ourselves in. As we got to the church itself, the outer door was open but the inner one was closed.

We let ourselves into the church to be met with darkness, apart from lit candles at the end of each pew. There was also some light over the alter and light coming in through the eye of god window.

I was half fearing that someone would emerge from the darkness to ask us what on earth we were doing. The other half of me wanted someone to emerge from the darkness and to give us more information about Elizabeth Lee.

We spent about 20 mins in the church, documenting and taking photos.
It turns out that the eye of god stained glass window is a lot smaller than what you would expect could hold a witch.

And then it was time to leave Edmundbuyers for a foggy drive home. With plans to return one day and help Elizabeth Lee escape and walk the earth once more.

…Or better still, have her face adorn an album cover (and t-shirt, available for pre-order now) for the rest of time.

After Elizabeth Lee was buried in Edmundbuyers graveyard, the locals became fearful that she would walk the earth again and punish them for putting her six feet under. So the church decided to bring her headstone inside the church. On the wall, above where the gravestone is now placed, they installed a stained glass window with the eye of god in the design, to ensure Elizabeth Lee never walks the earth again.

This is the first sketch of Elizabeth Lee who eventually appeared on the album cover.

Elizabeth Lee was the last person in North East England to get tried and convicted of being a witch.

This is also the first appearance of her wart. I know it’s cliche for a witch to have a wart. However, I like the idea that whoever accused her, knew that people were swept up in witch trials and used the wart as part of the ‘evidence’ that she’s a witch.

With these nuthatches (and yesterday’s moth), I used watered down ink in a few watercolour brush pens to get the different tonal values.

Unashamedly, if there’s a chance to put my grandad’s miner’s lamp into an illustration, I’ll do it. There’s no shame this time though as not only is the miner’s lamp a strong symbol of County Durham, the mines are right there in the lyrics.

There’s an adder there too. This is the 2nd time I’ve tried to draw an adder and got annoyed. They bring out the inner Indiana Jones in me “Why’s it got to be snakes?”

Today’s sketch is inspired by the song ‘Alfie, Cuthbert and Me’

This is another cover that I think could’ve really worked if the project didn’t take me in a different direction.

Apart from it failing one of the tests of logo design: ‘does it look like a pen*s?’ I would’ve loved to have developed this idea further but the album is full of such rich imagery that I can’t really complain. I mean I keep getting new ideas for album covers with every play through of the album. I can’t wait til you all to get to hear it!!

I think this is the only sketch from this song that I am featuring. That’s not a reflection on the song at all as it’s one of (many of) my favourites. No spoilers but… it’s a tale about a woodworm eating St Cuthberts coffin, observing the delusion of Alfie who is looking after and talking to the co**se of Cuthbert.
