What if the real story of French artist and printmaker Henri Matisse is not told on the canvas, but in the lives of the women he left in it shadow?
Celebrated as one of the most influential figures of modern art, Matisse transformed the language of colour to express emotion and feeling. As the leading voice of Fauvism his work changed the course of art history. Yet beyond the brilliance of his painting lies a more intimate story.
We are delighted to welcome to the apothecary award-winning author Sophie will present powerful talk on the complex, and often painful truth behind Matisse’s most iconic works drawing on her acclaimed novel Madame Matisse (Penguin, 2025), Sophie invites us to look at the lives of the women who shaped him - his devoted wife Amelie, his courageous daughter Marguerite, and Lydia Delectorskaya, the mysterious means whose arrival led to an explosive ultimatum.
This is a story of love, art and betrayal and of the emotional legacies that history has too often ignored.
Art Apothecary proudly hosts evenings where untold stories behind art and the artist come to life. 🩷
