What if the real story of French artist and printmaker Henri Matisse is not told on the canvas, but in the lives of the women he left in it shadow?

Celebrated as one of the most influential figures of modern art, Matisse transformed the language of colour to express emotion and feeling. As the leading voice of Fauvism his work changed the course of art history. Yet beyond the brilliance of his painting lies a more intimate story.

We are delighted to welcome to the apothecary award-winning author Sophie will present powerful talk on the complex, and often painful truth behind Matisse’s most iconic works drawing on her acclaimed novel Madame Matisse (Penguin, 2025), Sophie invites us to look at the lives of the women who shaped him - his devoted wife Amelie, his courageous daughter Marguerite, and Lydia Delectorskaya, the mysterious means whose arrival led to an explosive ultimatum.

This is a story of love, art and betrayal and of the emotional legacies that history has too often ignored.

Art Apothecary proudly hosts evenings where untold stories behind art and the artist come to life. 🩷

The Art Apothecary is delighted to welcome contemporary artist, teacher, and founder of Surrey Art School, for wonderful evening of shared knowledge, reflection, and conversation around creativity and the creative process.

Join Ellie as she explores how our experience of art education can shape, and sometimes limit our creativity.

Drawing on 16 years of experience as an artist, teacher, and founder of Surrey Art School, Ellie reflects on the often conflicting relationship between art and education: where creativity, intuition, and play can become overshadowed by performance, perfectionism, and assessment.

• Why do so many adults believe they “can’t draw”?

• Why do so many people stop making art altogether after school?

• And what happens when creativity becomes something to be judged rather than explored?

Through personal stories and reflections from her own journey, Ellie explores the idea of the “creative wound” the loss of confidence and freedom many people carry from early experiences of art-making and criticism.

The talk will also delve into the sketchbook: a space that, within education, can often become associated with pressure and performance rather than experimentation and discovery. Ellie shares how years of resistance to sketchbooks eventually led her towards a more intuitive journaling practice — one that reconnects drawing with curiosity, observation, self-reflection, and play.

Alongside sharing recent sketchbooks and creative practices, Ellie invites audiences to reconsider what art can be when freed from judgement.

This is a talk for artists, former artists, teachers, creatives, and anyone who has ever felt disconnected from their own creativity.
