Philippe Petit - Man on Wire.

On August 7, 1974, French tightrope walker Philippe Petit performed an amazing feat by walking on a tightrope between the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, at a height of more than 400 meters, and without any safety measures.

He walked on the rope for about 45 minutes, walking, sitting, and even kneeling amid the astonishment of passersby and police teams who tried to convince him to return.

George Polley - The Human Fly.

Whoops! Part of George Polley’d act was to pretend to slip and fall. Here he is seen in mid-air dropping one window ledge to another.

George Gibson Polley earned the nickname “The Human Fly” by climbing skyscrapers with just his hands and grit - no ropes, no harnesses, just heart.

Born in Richmond, Virginia, he first climbed a six-storey roof at age 12 to earn a suit, and it sparked a career that saw him conquer over 2,000 buildings across the U.S.

In 1920, he even made it up to the 30th floor of the Woolworth Building - the tallest building in the world at the time - before being stopped and arrested for not having a permit! Arrested on the job, basically.

Polley wasn’t just a stuntman - he was a crowd-pleaser, vaudeville performer, war veteran, and one of the pioneers of what would later be called buildering.

He was often hired by store-owners as part of the opening ceremony. He was able to command a fee of $200 - in those days a princely sum.

His career started as a boy, when he was playing baseball in Richmond, Vir-ginia. George hit a big shot, right on to the roof of a six-storey building. As it was the only ball they had, he climbed up to fetch it.

In 1910 his family moved to Chicago, and George got a job as a newspaper delivery boy.

One day he saw an expensive suit in a store window.I would stand on my head on top of this building for a suit like that,' he declared. The store-owner laughed. 'If you did that I would give you the suit,' he said.

George got his suit, and the episode attracted so much attention that a local theatre offered him a booking. He climbed buildings to attract crowds to the show.

He died in 1927 at just 29 years old from a brain tumour and not from falling off a building. 🧠❤️‍🩹

Kate Bush.

In 1978, at just 19 years old, Kate Bush soared to the top of the UK charts with her debut single Wuthering Heights - making her the first female artist ever to score a UK No. 1 with a completely self-written song.

But that was just the start. Kate wasn’t content to ride a wave - she reshaped it.

🛠️ By the mid-1980s she had built her own recording studio - in a converted barn attached to her childhood home - giving her full creative control. In that home-studio she embraced cutting-edge tech for the time (synthesizers, samplers, layered production), which helped bring albums like Hounds of Love to life.

🎬 And on stage?

For her only 1979 tour, the Tour of Life, she became one of pop’s first performers to use a wire-rigged headset microphone, so she could sing while dancing and acting - a forerunner of the modern pop-show format.

🌍 Influence doesn’t begin to cover it. Over the decades, Kate Bush has inspired a huge swathe of artists - from Björk to Florence + the Machine, and many more in the realms of art-pop, electronic, indie and alternative music.

⏳ Fast-forward to the 2020s: thanks to the hit TV show Stranger Things, Kate’s 1985 track Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) surged back into popularity worldwide - giving her a new generation of fans and underscoring how timeless and boundary-breaking her work remains.

✨ In short: Wuthering Heights wasn’t just a debut - it was a declaration. Kate Bush didn’t follow the rules. She rewrote them.

Queensway Tunnel.

There it lies underneath the River Mersey in Liverpool and was designed by engineer Sir Basil Mott.

It was opened to the public on 18 July 1934 by King George V to an audience of around 200,000 people.

It was a masterpiece of engineering and craftsmanship, taking around 1,700 workers to construct the tunnel that connects Birkenhead to Liverpool city centre.

Sadly, 17 men lost their lives during the construction of the tunnels.

This photograph was taken between 1929 and 1930. 📸

Ronnie Rondell Jr.

The legendary Hollywood stuntman famous for being set ablaze on the cover of Pink Floyd’s iconic 1975 album Wish You Were Here, passed away on August 12, 2025, at the age of 88.

Born in Hollywood on February 10, 1937, Rondell enjoyed a remarkable five-decade career as a stunt performer and coordinator.

He performed high-risk sequences in such classic films as How the West Was Won, Blazing Saddles, Lethal Weapon, Thelma & Louise, and his final appearance in The Matrix Reloaded in 2003.

His most enduring legacy, however, remains the unforgettable image of him engulfed in flames—dressed in a flame-retardant suit under a business suit—for the Wish You Were Here album cover. The famous photograph, shot at Warner Bros. Studios, captured him shaking hands with another stuntman while he burned. Although the first fourteen takes went smoothly, it was the fifteenth that singed off part of his mustache and eyebrow when a gust of wind altered the flames.
Ronnie’s courage and professionalism defined a storied career that included co-founding the elite stunt troupe Stunts Unlimited in 1970.

He is survived by his devoted wife Mary (married in 1969), their son R. A. Rondell, three grandchildren, a great-grandson, and his brother Ric. Tragically, his other son, Reid, also a stuntman, died in a helicopter crash in 1985.

Ronnie Rondell Jr. may have literally been set on fire for vivid imagery—but his legacy burns stronger than ever. His fearless spirit, artistry, and dedication to his craft will continue to inspire.
