New Year without Real Resolution?
Get SMART for 2025!
Einstein defined insanity as ādoing the same thing over and over again and expecting different resultsā (4).
If you set New Yearās resolutions and are already floundering, rest assured you are not alone and there is a way! Research shows that by the end of week two, around 88% of us have already given them up! (1).
Despite these startling stats, a recent yougov.uk recent study tracked Britons plans in for New Yearās Resolutions for 2025 and found over 27% of Britons had planned to make resolutions, with age a determining factor (52% of 18-24 year olds compared to 16% over-55s) (2).
AND a whooping 39% of us making those resolutions in the UK were around improving our health.. (2).
- 1 in 6 wanted to get fit or exercise more
- 16% wanted to lose weight
- 7% wanted to simply be āhealthierā
- 5% wished to eat more healthily
- 4% of us intended to drink less alcohol and / or give up smoking or va**ng
- 1% wanted to commit to improving our mental health
The Science behind achieving change..
Prof. Asim Shah from Baylor College of Medicine believes the reason for such a low success rate in sticking to resolutions is that we try to change too much too quickly and this affects our levels of motivation and resilience to succeed (1).
It turns out our brains canāt cope with too much change at once and become overwhelmed, slipping back to the habits we want to whether we like it or not!
Mark Hyman, MD - Co-Founder & Chief Medical Officer of Function Health says changes need to be ābrain friendlyā. This means having clear goals, with real expectations and not do the āall or nothingā thinking we all associate with new year resolution making! (3)
So, itās time to start SMART!
Change following naturopathic principles means we need to remedy our approach to create real resolutionsā¦small steps or changes at a speed and at the right time for ourselves to achieve our goals.
- Specific : Be clear about what you want to achieve working with others with similar goals.
- Measurable : Have success that can be seen and celebrate every achievement! Our brains love success and with each step you achieve, youāll get a dopamine hit to reward you!
- Achievable: Think about small, individual and manageable steps, incremental changes that build on in your current habits and lifestyle.
- Relevant : Motivation only happens when we have a belief in what we do ā why do you want to do what you are doing? Remind yourself and donāt be afraid to re adjust if needed if something feels wrong.
- Time : Track your progress. Real timeframes for each step mean achieving them is possible. Take each day as it comes and be kind to yourself on the days that are hard to find your resolve.
Through this naturopathic approach, you will transform your health through solutions that are realistic, sustainable and life changing!
