Sandra’s Nanny’s pride and joy: her beautiful maroon silk eiderdown bedding. I picked out some gorgeous vintage silk for the eiderdown and hand sewed it for authenticity.
I handmade the bed frame and probably created too ornate a headboard for the time period, as most of the furniture was likely utilitarian in design, but I wanted to show the bed as Sandra remembered it as a child: a massively luxurious, immaculate and adored piece of furniture that her Nan took so much pride in.
It goes to show that stories of tenement living very often miss the pride and care that tenants went to in order to create functional, warm and beautiful places to live. They made the most of the little space they had and ultimately created HOMES filled with love and memories, not just shelters or places to rest their heads at night.
