“Cuba has always had the privilege of being a kind of beacon for cinephiles. A love for cinema runs deep in Cuba, and I am no exception. Furthermore, the Cuban public loves Cuban cinema with boundless passion. You don’t see that in other countries; they don’t have that same love for their own national cinema.”

Luciano Castillo, Cuban cinema critic and head of the cinemateca was given the National Film Award 2026 in Cuba; but, above all, he is a man who cannot live without cinema. ❤️ Read an interview with Castillo on our website via the link in our bio ☝️

Celebrate 26 July with this iconic art.

26 de julio (26 July) by Cuban Artist: Raúl Martínez (1927–1995)
Year: 1964 Medium: Oil and collage on masonite photo.Museo de bellas artes Havana.

This painting marks the moment where Martinez moved away from pure abstraction into his signature pop art style. It combines gestural colour strokes with printed materials, evoking the visual energy of street murals, political signs, and mass rallies commemorating the 26th of July Movement.

The son of a sugar mill worker and a teacher, Raul Martínez trained at the San Alejandro Academy. Encouraged by abstract artist Sandu Darie, inspired by Bauhaus professor László Moholy-Nagy, Martínez enrolled in the Chicago Design Institute where he developed his abstract expressionist style. In the 50s he returned to Havana and also worked as a graphic designer. From 1967, his painting became figurative and painterly, of revolutionary heroes and ordinary people, with a modernist grid structure.
