British Art Fair 26 | Stand 52
Clare Haward NEAC

Saatchi Gallery, SW3
24 - 27 September

The gallery proudly presents new work by Clare Haward at this year’s fair. Clare has recently completed her MA in painting from the Royal College of Art and we share some works made during this time on our stand.
Clare considers the process of painting to be an act of discovery, a way to crystallise or articulate something ambiguous, buried in the tension between subject and surface. This emergence is precarious, the formation and destruction of pictorial ideas occur simultaneously, appearing and vanishing with the application and erasure of mediums, advancing and collapsing at different scales. Visual perception, anything that excites the eye, can be a starting point for Clare’s paintings, yet the self reflexive process that follows often allows for a subconscious narrative to emerge. Some paintings resolve quickly whilst
others are worked on over months, repeatedly scraped back or sanded down.

“Paintings have their own inner logic and sometimes it is so strong, it becomes a battle to make sense of. I love that about painting. You can be so close and lose it in a moment.”

Small Paintings
The small works on board represent part of an ongoing body of work through which I ask questions of my painting practice. Painted on small gessoed boards and inspired by
Goethe’s ‘tender empiricism’, the scale and limits of size allow me to explore ideas related to surface, depth, pictorial depiction, geometry and matter. Each piece is a stand alone work.

Biography
Clare is a London based artists who recently graduated with an MA Painting from the Royal College of Art as a recipient of the Radcliffe Trust Scholarship. She has exhibited widely in the UK including in the John Moores Painting Prize in 2025, several solo exhibitions at 155A Gallery and numerous group shows. She is a recipient of an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant and has undertaken residencies in Cyprus and Berlin. She
teaches painting and drawing to adults and is a founder of Stanley Life Drawing in South London.

BRITISH ART FAIR
Stand 52
155A Gallery | Helen Ireland
The gallery will be showcasing a new pair of works by London based artist Helen Ireland, from her new series of works entitled ‘Pink Sky’.

In this recent series, Helen has created paintings and conté drawings that explore the delicate subtleties of shifting colour and atmosphere. Different saturations and hues of pinks and yellows map into airy spaces that float and hover. Helen’s colour palette relates to personal observations of the ever-changing skies over the London capital. The images; using watercolour, gouache, conté crayon and mapping pens, have evolved through overlaid plotting and re-positioning of geometric triangles of colour that push and pull, in and out of forms beyond the picture plane. Her shapes ascend and descend, creating a mesmeric ambiguity that is at once subtle and visually coherent.

Biography:
Helen Ireland studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins School of Art and received her MA from Chelsea School of Art. She participated in artists’ workshops in Namibia, Georgia and The Netherlands. Helen was a founder member of Gasworks Artists’ and Cubitt Artists’ Studios.

Her work is held in the collections of British Land, FORTE, Arthur Andersen, UNESCO, British Airwats (Executive Suite) and many Private Collections.
