A weekend dedicated entirely to the versatility, rich textures and expressive power of the guitar in all its forms. This anniversary year, we’ve brought together a fantastic line-up of international artists, esteemed faculty, returning alumni and exceptional emerging talent right here in Glasgow.

Back in 2011 I recorded a cover of Genie In A Bottle, in my mate Jon’s dining room in Manchester.

I’d been playing it live for years and it was a real audience favourite. I always loved this song. It’s a truly brilliant piece of writing from Pam Sheyne (who, eight years later, co-wrote Burden Of The Road with me, in a fever dream of an LA weekend)

Listening back, I’m transported to 2011. Somewhere between touring with Lisa Hannigan and writing Great Lakes, I had a weekend off with Jon Thorne after a duo show.

I had all these covers up my sleeve. Some from the shows, some I’d just been musing on for years. We cut the Eavesdropping record in a couple of days, working early til late. I slept on the sofa.

That album was released as a CD in 2011, but it sold out years ago and I moved on to the next thing. Fifteen years later, these songs still haven’t been available for streaming.

I heard Genie again recently, a snapshot of a younger, less gravelly me. I felt really proud of it and realised how much I wanted it out in the world.

Genie In A Bottle is out today!
