Victoria Pavilion Arts

Victoria Pavilion Arts Non-profit Arts project and gallery space supporting the local community and promoting the arts in Wealden

Victoria Pavilion Arts is a project delivered by Sussex Support Service in Uckfield. We passionately believe that art has the ability to make people feel good, build confidence and connect with others. We develop participatory arts activities and experiences with people who are often excluded and, through our gallery and workshop spaces promote and provide opportunities for local artists, creative practitioners and emerging talent.

🎨 Artist Spotlight: Sam Caethoven

In just a few weeks, we will be opening our annual Summer Exhibition, In This Place, bringing together more than 20 artists from across Wealden and East Sussex. In the run-up to the exhibition, we'll be shining a spotlight on each of our participating artists.

Today we're delighted to introduce Sam Caethoven, a textile and mixed media artist from Seaford, East Sussex.

Sam's creative practice combines found objects with embroidery, textiles and basketry, creating work that is deeply rooted in landscape, history and a sense of place. A keen mudlarker on the River Thames and fossil hunter, Sam draws inspiration from the environments she explores and the stories held within the objects she discovers.

Particularly distinctive are her framed works inspired by traditional log cabin textiles, created using found clay pipe stems. These celebrate the subtle colours and markings the stems acquire over time, creating a geological record of their journey through the landscape.

Although still a relatively new artist, Sam has already exhibited and sold work through mudlarking-themed and other local exhibitions. Her work reflects a fascination with the relationship between human-made objects and the natural environment, revealing the traces of time, use and place embedded within them.

For Sam, In This Place resonates strongly with her own creative practice, which is centred on the connection between landscape, memory, discovery and belonging.

🎨 Artist Spotlight: Gill Bustamante - Artist

In just a few weeks, we will be opening our annual Summer Exhibition, In This Place, bringing together more than 20 artists from across Wealden and East Sussex. In the run-up to the exhibition, we'll be shining a spotlight on each of our participating artists.

Today we're delighted to introduce Gill Bustamante, whose large-scale, semi-abstract oil paintings celebrate the beauty, mystery and spirit of the English landscape.

Drawing on memory, observation and a deep connection to nature, Gill's work explores the hidden energy and enchantment of the places she walks. Blending landscape with elements of magical realism, her paintings invite viewers to look beyond the familiar and discover the wildlife, atmosphere and unseen stories that inhabit the natural world.

Gill describes her paintings as portals, offering a glimpse into the timeless beauty and mystery of nature and encouraging us to reconnect with the landscapes that surround us.

Her work is a wonderful fit for In This Place, inviting us to experience landscape not just as a location, but as something alive with memory, wonder and possibility.

🎨 Artist Spotlight: Max Woodlock

In just a few weeks, we will be opening our annual Summer Exhibition, In This Place, bringing together more than 20 artists from across Wealden and East Sussex. In the run-up to the exhibition, we'll be shining a spotlight on each of our participating artists.

Today we're delighted to introduce newcomer Max Woodlock.

Max draws inspiration from music, literature and folklore, blending external influences with personal experience to create enigmatic, dreamlike compositions. Through the juxtaposition of muted and saturated colours, his work celebrates both realism and intricate detail.

Working across a variety of media, Max favours combinations such as watercolour pencil and acrylic paint, or graphite with oil and gouache, allowing him to create richly layered and atmospheric pieces.

A visual narrative connects all of Max's work. Characters, locations and landmarks reappear across paintings and maps, creating a shared universe that invites viewers to explore the relationships between place, story and imagination. It is this interconnected world that forms Max's response to the theme In This Place.

Today our Arts for Wellbeing group were creating ceramic sun plaques with the wonderful Katharine Rabson Stark.
The Sun Gods were clearly delighted with these fabulous creations, as the sun hasn't stopped shining over Uckfield since! β˜€οΈ
We especially love Susan Newell wonderfully expressive sun face, complete with windswept hair and a cheeky wink. Isn't it fantastic? It perfectly captures the joy, creativity and individuality that make our sessions so special.

Penelope Parker as usual went rogue with her nautical theme . There's always one and it's usually Pen !πŸ˜‚

A huge thank you to Katharine for another inspiring workshop ( even with injured finger) and to all our participants for bringing such imagination and enthusiasm to their creations.

🎨 Artist Spotlight: Jan Beesley πŸ“·

In just a few weeks, we will be opening our annual Summer Exhibition, In This Place, bringing together more than 20 artists from across Wealden and East Sussex. In the run-up to the exhibition, we'll be shining a spotlight on each of our participating artists.

Today we're delighted to introduce photographer Jan Beesley.

Jan's photographic practice is intuitive and exploratory, embracing both traditional and experimental techniques. Allowing light, weather and movement to influence the outcome, her images emerge with a sense of spontaneity, discovery and transformation.

Working primarily on project-based series, Jan explores particular ideas, locations and themes, often drawing on her fascination with memory and place. Hand-finishing plays an important role in her work, with the addition of gold and silver leaf, paint and stitching bringing a tactile, layered quality to her images.

Jan's creative practice also extends into artist books, combining photography and poetry to explore the relationship between word and image.

A member of Chalk Gallery, Lewes, Jan has exhibited widely throughout Sussex and Kent, as well as in London and New York.

Today we tried something a little different in our Friday Arts for Wellbeing session.

The wonderful Amber Joy Creative Studio introduced participants to the art of Decorative Tole Painting – the colourful folk art traditionally seen adorning canal boats and everyday objects.

Originating in the 17th century, tole painting is rooted in the belief that art should not be reserved for galleries or the privileged few. Instead, it celebrates the idea that everyday objects can be beautiful and that creativity belongs to everyone.

This philosophy of accessible, mindful creativity resonates strongly with what we do here at Victoria Pavilion Arts. Through our Arts for Wellbeing programme, we encourage people to explore their creativity and experience the joy of making in a welcoming and supportive environment.

A huge thank you to Amber for sharing her skills and inspiring us to try something new. We think our participants did a fantastic job! 🎨✨

We always say that our Arts for Wellbeing sessions are about the process, not the product – and that is most certainly true.

However, it's always a wonderful moment seeing the delight on participants' faces when they create something they are proud of, discover a hidden talent, or achieve far more than they thought possible.

That sense of achievement can be incredibly powerful. It helps build confidence, unlock motivation, and strengthen self-esteem, reminding people of their capabilities and creativity.

The artwork may not be the goal, but the pride, confidence and sense of possibility that grow alongside it are invaluable. πŸ’™πŸŽ¨

πŸŽ¨πŸ’™ A Big Sunny Thank You to Buxted Art Club πŸ’™πŸŽ¨

A huge thank you to Buxted Art Club for their generous donation of Β£215 towards our Youth Arts for Wellbeing Group.

Everyone at Victoria Pavilion Arts, along with the young people who attend the sessions and their parents and carers, is absolutely delighted by your support.

This wonderful contribution will help our Youth Arts for Wellbeing Group continue to thrive, providing a safe and creative space where young people can build confidence, express themselves, make friendships, and support their mental health and wellbeing through art.

Community support like this makes a real difference, and we are so grateful to have local organisations championing the wellbeing of young people in our area.

Thank you for helping creativity change lives. πŸ’™βœ¨
