Tucked into the slopes of Monte La Mola sits the Santuario de Santa María Magdalena — nearly three decades in the making (1918–1946), and every honey-coloured stone shows it. Its architect trained under Gaudí, and it’s unmistakable: twin 25-metre spires, river pebbles pressed straight into the walls, and a floor plan shaped like the very jar Mary Magdalene carried to anoint Christ’s feet.

Even the road up plays along — a stone trumpeter announces your arrival long before the towers come into view, carved in the same wild spirit as the sanctuary itself.

Glenfinnan Monument: Standing tall since 1815, still stealing the view 🏴🗿

Swapped the viaduct for the water and found this fella keeping watch over Loch Shiel — raised in memory of the Jacobite clansmen who answered Bonnie Prince Charlie’s call back in 1745. He’s had a couple of centuries to perfect that brooding stare across the loch, snow-capped peaks and all, and honestly? Still serving looks. Not bad for a monument older than most countries’ entire road network 😄

There’s something about rounding the bend in Glen Finnan and seeing this view open up — snow still clinging to the peaks, glen empty and gold, and that famous sweep of stone arches carrying the old railway line through it all. No steam train today, just stillness. Scotland doesn’t do subtle.

Rounded the bend in Glen Finnan and just about did a double take — snow-capped peaks, an empty golden glen, and THAT viaduct sweeping across it like it’s auditioning for a film role (spoiler: it’s had plenty). No steam train chugging through today, but honestly the view didn’t need the extra drama. Scotland really said “let me just casually be breathtaking” 🏔️

Alnwick Castle is the second-largest inhabited castle in England — still home to the Duke of Northumberland — and just beyond its walls sits the Alnwick Garden’s infamous Poison Garden, where every plant behind the black gates could kill you.

A Rock Full of Puffins 🐧

Thousands of birds, one tiny stretch of Northumberland coast — and somehow every single ledge is spoken for. Guillemots and razorbills packed shoulder to shoulder by the water’s edge, puffins tucked into every mossy crevice up top, and not a spare inch of rock to be had.

We spotted one little chap having a proper sulk all on his own, quite content to let the crowd get on with it.
