ONE DAY TO GO!!

Just a reminder why we are doing this.
Matchbox opera lost their dear friend, Dr Mark Pasola, last year, and were determined to keep his memory alive by coming together in celebration of his life, and the music that he loved.

Mark was a passionate advocate of good mental health support, and would have been delighted that we are supporting Mental Health Resource, a local charity that does so much good in the community.

We ask that everyone who knew Mark, and is supporting us in this concert, give a donation to this very worthy cause.

We are all raring to go for tomorrow…
frocks are all ready and boas are fully fluffed…

Don’t forget… tickets aren’t needed… please just arrive,
donations will be welcomed either before, or during the event.
We’ll have the means to take card payments… or bring cash if you prefer!

See you at 7!!

A quick history of Matchbox Opera….

The group started way back in 1969, as Neville Park Opera, and became Matchbox in 2003, when King Charles The Martyr Hall became both the rehearsal and performance venue.

The first Matchbox Opera production was Rigoletto in 2002.

In 2004, it was Nicolai’s The Merry Wives Of Windsor, in which some of our concert singers appeared, with Mark singing Falstaff… and lots of shenanigans with wicker baskets…. and a trellis.

Then it was The Magic Flute in 2005 followed by Smetana’s The Bartered Bride in 2006.

In 2007 was the first Carmen, when yours truly joined the group. Quite pleased I did….

We then went on to produce Donizetti’s The Elixir Of Love in 2008 and Rossini’s Le Comte Ory in 2009, both featuring Mark.

In 2010 Mark sang the title role in Don Giovanni, followed by Marcello in La Boheme in 2011.

We returned to Mozart in 2012, with Cosi Fan Tutte, with Mark singing Don Alfonso, and in 2013 Matchbox decided to branch out…

Our production of Tosca was taken to 4 churches local to Tunbridge Wells, with Mark singing the evil Baron Scarpia. As our tour was so successful, we continued to tour, the next being the second Rigoletto in 2015, when Mark sang the title role.

On to 2016, and we returned to Carmen, with Mark singing Zuniga… and our guest tenor Richard sang Don Jose.

In 2017 was Matchbox’s second Magic Flute, with Mark singing Papageno, and in 2018 we returned again to La Boheme, with Mark once more singing Marcello, Richard as Rudolpho, Rebecca singing Mimi and me singing Musetta.

Our final production, although we didn’t realise it at the time, was The Marriage Of Figaro in 2019, with Mark singing The Count.

Then, of course, came 2020…and production ceased, although the group very much stayed in touch.

And here we are, this being the first time that we’ve sung together in over three years. We are of course, devastated that we are doing so without Mark, but we hope that this concert may not be a stand alone, with the possibility of it becoming an annual event, enabling us to always keep Mark in our memories.

Photo… from somewhere way back in time… with Mark front and centre at the Church hall in the annual concerts that Matchbox produced back then.

5 days to go!!

A reminder of the amazing charity we’re supporting.

As a GP, Mark was passionate about providing mental health support to anyone who needed it… and we are delighted to be supporting Mental Health Resource, a charity based in Tunbridge Wells, that does so much for the communities of Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge and across West Kent.

Between April 2022 and March 2023 they helped 931 people… 365 through community projects and 566 through their advocacy project.

Their hub, in the centre of Tunbridge wells, is a fabulous space, with kitchen and cafe, lounge area and art space, and the centre offers many activities and 1-2-1 support through their drop in and well being activities.

The support at the hub can be accessed via self referral…

Another reminder of the wonderful charity that we are supporting with our concert.

Mark was a passionate advocate of mental health support, and so we are delighted to be raising money for Mental Health Resource, a charity based in Tunbridge Wells, that serves the community right across West Kent, Maidstone, Dartford, Swanley and Gravesend.

The Hub, in Grosvenor Road, Tunbridge Wells, has a programme of activities, including a walking group and an allotment, and it provides vital support, not only to adults, but also to 13 - 19 years olds.

To find out more about what they do, visit their website, which has all the information about the charity, what they do, and how they help.

And, of course, don’t forget to donate… see the link below.

And finally, we end our concert with an absolute corker, The Finale to The Magic Flute.

It’s kicked off by Nick, reprising his role of Monostatos from the 2018 production… and then everyone piles in.. with Rebecca at The Queen of The Night, Tamira, Abby and Annie and the three ladies, and Patrick as Sarastro.

It will be the perfect dramatic ending to our evening!!

Our final solo item in our programme is one of my absolute favourites.
Carmen, by George Bizet, has been produced by Matchbox twice, first in 2007, then again in 2016.

For the second production, we were fortunate to secure the talents of our guest tenor, Richard Rowe… and it couldn’t have been that bad an experience, as he came back in 2018 to sing Rudolpho in La Boheme.

Richard will be singing one of Carmen's stand out pieces, La Fleur Que Tu M’Avais Jetee, often referred to as The Flower Aria. In it, Carmen has accused Don Jose of having no feelings for her, as he insists on obeying the summons back to barracks. To say she’s a bit cross is putting it mildly. However, in an attempt to prove his love to her, he reveals a flower… the very one that she threw at him all those weeks ago….

Alas, our photo collection doesn’t include many of Carmen, so here is Richard, singing Rudolpho in La Boheme, with Rebecca as Mimi.
