✨ LOOKING BACK: Open Studio 2025

To close our 2025 Physical Theatre LAB, the cohort shared the culmination of their two-week process at our inaugural Open Studio event at 🎭

After four days of collaborative devising, the group presented a bold, playful, moving, and imaginative 20-minute piece built from the many ideas, worlds, and provocations explored throughout the LAB. We were thrilled to welcome around 60 audience members - fellow artists, industry folk, and local community members - into the space to witness the work and celebrate this incredible cohort together 🎉

👀 You can now watch the full 20-minute sharing on YouTube - link in bio!

The event also included a facilitated discussion led by Dicky Souray around the experience of being an early-career artist in Cornwall today - opening up important conversations around opportunity, support, sustainability, and artistic community in the region. It was incredibly encouraging to see audience members already beginning to offer ideas, connections, and support to the cohort in response.

The afternoon continued with drinks, nibbles, and networking before the cohort headed off to the beach for a dip in the sea - the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer’s day and wrap up the incredible two weeks they’d had! 😎 🌊

Stay tuned… tomorrow we’ll be hearing from the 2025 cohort themselves! 🎤

✨ LOOKING BACK: Week 2 of our 2025 Physical Theatre LAB

After an intense and inspiring first week of training, Week 2 of the LAB shifted into collaborative devising mode as we settled into our new studio space at the beautiful 💫

At the start of the week, each cohort member arrived with their own creative provocation, idea, or question to explore. Over four days, the studio became a hive of simultaneous rehearsals, experiments, improvisations, and discoveries, as different groups formed and re-formed to test ideas and generate material together 💡

Using the tools, practices, and approaches they had encountered throughout Week 1, the cohort began shaping movement, text, imagery, atmosphere, and performance material into a collection of bold and exciting creative worlds. Slowly, common threads and connections started to emerge between the different ideas, allowing the group to begin weaving the material together into a final shared piece.

There was such a strong sense of trust, openness, curiosity, and creative generosity in the room throughout the devising process - it was incredible to witness the depth of collaboration that had developed within the cohort 🔥

Tomorrow we’ll be sharing more from the final Open Studio performance and event…stay tuned! 👀

✨ LOOKING BACK: Day 4 of our 2025 Physical Theatre LAB

Day 4 of the LAB was led by the exquisite , who brought such sensitivity, integrity, and joy into the space 🎊

After a gentle, somatic warm-up, the cohort explored the relationship between body and voice, experimenting with how physicality, rhythm, and sound can be integrated to create a present, playful, and more available performer. From this place, the group discovered some wonderfully epic theatrical states through both body and voice.

As the day unfolded, the workshop became increasingly bold, ridiculous, playful, and full of laughter - drawing on some of Solène’s clowning practice and training, the group threw themselves into a series of improvisation games and exercises which had the studio in absolute hysterics! 🤡😂

There was something incredibly freeing about the atmosphere Solène created - playful, open, and full of trust. The cohort absolutely loved the workshop and dived in with total commitment. By the end of the day, the studio was buzzing!💥💥

Thank you so much Solène! 💜

✨ LOOKING BACK: Day 3 of our 2025 Physical Theatre LAB

Day 3 of the LAB brought another brilliant day with the wonderfully effervescent ⚡

The day was packed with games, singing, improvisation, movement, and writing, as the group explored some of the building blocks of character and storytelling 🎭

Tom shared some of his golden nuggets with us, such as how playing with Space, Effort, and Focus can shape character, status, and relationship dynamics. Using Little Red Riding Hood as a starting point, the group explored how stories can be broken down into key beats, and how worlds can be built through Images, Themes, and Sensory Elements. From there, Tom led the cohort through a writing task before inviting them to experiment with blending text and movement in performance.

It was such a joyful, imaginative, and generously playful day, and the cohort left with a huge range of tools and ideas to carry into the rest of the LAB. Thank you so much Tom! 🌟

✨ LOOKING BACK: Day 2 of our 2025 Physical Theatre LAB

On Day 2 of the LAB, the cohort spent the day with the incredible , Artistic Director of . What an epic day it was! ⚡

Joseph brought so much energy, passion, and inspiration into the room, sharing his powerful methodology of “Elements & Atmosphere”. By exploring Earth, Air, Fire, and Water physically, the cohort began discovering how elemental qualities can shape character, status, emotion, rhythm, and storytelling.

The studio was full of movement, imagination, transformation, and play. 🪨🌪️🔥🌊

One thing that really stayed with us was Joseph’s surprise at how connected and open the ensemble already felt, despite the group having only met the day before. By Day 2, this cohort of artists were already beginning to move, collaborate, and create with real trust and generosity towards one another.

We absolutely loved having Joseph with us, and know his workshop left a big impact on the group - thank you Joseph!🧡🧡

✨ LOOKING BACK: Day 1 of our 2025 Physical Theatre LAB

Last summer, our inaugural Creative Rise Cornwall cohort met for the first time as we kicked off our Physical Theatre LAB at . It was such an exciting day - not only to begin two weeks of intensive training, creative exploration, and collaborative devising, but also for this group of 12 early-career artists to begin building their own creative community 🚀

Day 1 started with a Gecko-inspired workshop led by Creative Rise Founder & Artistic Director , focusing on connection, ensemble building, and physical storytelling. We also spent time reflecting on what the cohort wanted this space to be - not just over the two-week LAB, but across the wider 6-month programme. They said:
🌀 Supportive
🌀 Collaborative
🌀 Open
🌀 Creatively Ambitious

This was the beginning of a pretty special two weeks⚡

More from the LAB soon…stay tuned! 👀
