Truro Choral Society

Truro Choral Society We are an non-auditioned, mixed four-part choir, who always welcome new members. We are led by our inspiring Musical Director, Martin Palmer.

Please do join us - come along to any rehearsal 7-9pm on Tuesday evenings during term time. Truro Choral Society is a large and friendly choir of around 140 singers who currently meet every Tuesday evening at Truro Preparatory School to rehearse some of the greatest choral repertoire written. We regularly perform in our favourite concert venue – Truro Cathedral – and have enjoyed performing to largely full houses over the past few years.

Saturday 4th July 7.30pm
Three Spires Singers and Abbey Brass present a concert of joyful summer music for choir with organ and brass. For tickets please go to https://minack.com/whats-on/i-was-glad/

Parry's famous anthem I Was Glad – which has been sung at every coronation since 1902 – opens the concert as truly one of the most majestic and uplifting pieces. Dvorak's Mass in D is a wonderfully contrasting work, with exuberance and poise, full of wonderful romantic harmony. For this we will be joined by young talented soloists from among the cathedral's choral scholars.

Organ and brass will share the limelight in Guilmant's joyous Grand Choeur Dialogué and one of the most well-known organ pieces, Widor's Toccata. We will also hear the choir sing Dupré's Laudate. Vierne's epic Messe Solennelle provides some French grandeur, with a particularly apocalyptic 'Kyrie'. Rutter's Psalm 150, written for Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee in 2002 is a bright, fun, dancing work, reminiscent of the composer's famous 'Gloria'.

This is a concert with a vast expanse of sound in the cathedral's huge acoustic, with what David Briggs describes as the greatest cathedral organ in the country.

Conductor: James Anderson-Besant

Organist: Andrew Wyatt
Soprano: Lucy Mitten
Alto: Jenny Wells
Tenor: William Hammond
Bass: Lewis Cobb

Saturday (13th) is concert day! 7.30pm, Truro Cathedral.
One of our pieces is the Requiem composed by John Rutter in 1985
John Rutter composed his Requiem in 1985. It is a beautifully accessible, melodious, and emotionally comforting choral work. Unusually, Rutter used some of the traditional Latin mass texts but added English scriptural readings, avoiding the terrifying imagery of older Requiems. Instead he portrays serene resignation with rich tonal harmony and lush orchestration.
The composition has been highly critically acclaimed:
“Here is music finely crafted, written with love for the art and an especial care for choral sound. It is melodious without being commonplace, harmonically rich without being sticky, modern in the graceful way of a child who grows up responsive to newness but not wanting to kick his elders in the teeth.” (Gramophone Magazine)
*The Opening/Closing: The Requiem Aeternam and Lux Aeterna gently set the mood, establishing an atmosphere of peace.
*Pie Jesu: This movement is a soaring, pure, and emotionally resonant standout.
*The Lord is my Shepherd: A glorious, uplifting setting of Psalm 23.

It is exceptionally well-written for the voice. Let’s hope we can do it justice!

Just one week now before our summer concert!
Fauré’s Requiem, long regarded as a masterpiece, adopts a serene and consoling tone with its emphasis on peace and comfort. Rutter’s Requiem has become one of the most performed choral pieces of the late 20th century with its accessible harmonies and melodic beauty.
Truro Choral Society is joined by members of Truro Philharmonia and soloists Taylor London and Charlie Murray for what promises to be a contemplative and relaxing evening of fine music.

The organ soloist in our concert on 13th June is Alfie Beston, the current organ scholar at Truro Cathedral. He has been a much appreciated accompanist for our choir this past year before he takes up his place at Oxford University where he will doubtless entertain many as he has entertained us.
He was awarded a music scholarship to Sevenoaks School. Alfie previously served as Organ Scholar at St Giles the Abbot, Farnborough, and as Associate Organist at St John's the Evangelist, Bromley.
In addition to his organ studies, Alfie is a woodwind player. He was lead alto saxophonist for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra Academy Big Band from 2018 to 2020 and currently performs as principal flautist with the South London Youth Orchestra. He has also trebled - playing saxophones, clarinet, flute, and piccolo (isn't this quadrupled (ed)?) in productions including Guys and Dolls, Made in Dagenham and Elf. As a composer and arranger, Alfie's work has raised over £5,000 for charity and includes international collaborations with leading session musicians.
In his free time, Alfie enjoys running, swimming, and flying drones.
