Swap n Collage: An idea suggested by Grace which I thought was brilliant. Everyone brings in
old work that they won’t be using again, everyone swaps with everyone else and recreate them
into increadibe collages and new artworks. This session brings up ideas of editing from sorting through previous work, thinking about what you’re prepared to give to another artist, working with someone else’s palette and marking making. Good chats about recent travels, colour and dementia patients, sociability, the NHS and hybrid practices. Dreamy artworks made, well done everyone.

The lino printing session! Building on the material gathered from last week, we looked at print works by David Nash, Eric Ravilious, Amy Jeffs and Angela Harding to finalised our self portait plate designs. After drawing and  cutting, we inked and printed - the results are so good.

Mainly we learnt to trust the process, start very simply and enjoy making adjustments along the way. Well done every one, especially because self portrait is a massive subject matter, you've all made varied and excellent work Xx

This week’s Experimental Drawing Club we explored how to interpret Self portraiture in a range of ways. Motifs, patterns and symbols that were relevant to ourselves, drawing from memory, abstracting the face and some straightforward observation techniques in dry media. All in prep for next week’s Lino printing session. I forgot to take pics of the Monday group so images from yesterday’s session only - but great work made then too ☺️

This week’s session was Edens and we focused on Greens and the paradises that came out of creating colour palettes - we’re so sensitive to greens that it’s a great idea to have a play with one yellow and one blue and try and get a full range of hues. Also concentrating on something technical was a great way to relaxed our imaginations - beautiful green spaces came about. Also lots. of lovely tales of tulips and travels.

Today we did “Hatching*” looking at a technique as old as the hills and used in most art forms across the world and timelines. An in-depth look at how to build tone in drawing and printing. We started with a few exercises looking closely at copies of different prints (drypoint, woodblock, etching) and how artists have approached hatching in multiple style and then moved onto colour hatching with oil pastels. All the vibrant colours and vibrating lines - yum all round xx *beautiful observation from one of the artists after I introduced the session who asked how/if the ‘Hatching’ related to Spring Time - if only my brain was that agile!

Incredible colours at the sketching trip to All Saints Church in Clifton, Bristol to draw the John Piper windows made in the mid 1960s. We did a range of 10 to 20mins exercises to engage with church’s internal architecture: 1) continuous line drawings; 2) noting all the verticals, horizontals, diagonals and rounds in different media; 2) big colour and line studies of small details; 4) finding the multiple colour hues within the fibreglass itself eg cyans, ultramarine, Prussian blues and indigos.

It was good to think about huge stories of creation and life in such a beautiful space. Thank you to Wendy at All Saints Church in Clifton who was so welcoming - she says that they regularly have architecture students who visit and is always happy to have artists in the space.

Good chats: Disobedience; creative Gritty Bits of Stuff; Wendy’s chair from the church’s 1860s era - it says ‘Men Only’ and she takes great pleasure in sitting on it every day

○°~ Join Experimental Drawing Club - now open for bookings April - July 2026 . Weekly sessions on Mondays at SILT Studio led by . Booking link in our bio and linktree 🌳

These sessions are a time to explore the enormous possibilities and aspects of drawing. We experiment in a range of media, techniques, and processes. In the past we’ve made leporello/concertina books - played Surrealist party games - made automatic drawings - drawn in response to text and music - drawn from memories and half-rememberings and semi forgotten dreams - drawn from films and/or props. Each session we make lots of work and spend time together after each exercise discussing what we’ve done. No previous experience necessary - no draughtsperson skills required - just a want to play with materials and to explore drawing processes
