We are beyond delighted to be welcoming the wonderful Pendley Shakespeare Festival...a wonderful asset to our community.

“Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more!”

After seven long years absence we are thrilled to present The Pendley Shakespeare Festival in our new home at The DEMBE Theatre.

In 1949, Dorian Williams established the festival on the grounds of his ancestral home; now the Pendley Manor Hotel. Since the Pandemic, the hotel has been unable to support the festival in its original form, and so its future has been uncertain.

After increasingly unacceptable demands from the management, we have concluded our collaboration with the hotel. Parting is such sweet sorrow.

For a moment it seemed like the festival would never return.

But we wouldn’t let that stand.

As Shakespeare himself moved his players indoors, an exciting new chapter begins in the DEMBE this glorious Summer, with an all new production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, promising all the mirth, merriment, mischief and magic as ever before…
(without the cagouls and wellies!)

With the support of David Evans MBE and Liz Raba at The DEMBE we are breathing new life into 70 years’ worth of this community-led cultural institution, with industry standard lighting, sound and special effects, an all new Summer Youth Workshop… and a roof!

Given David’s historical involvement with the festival, we couldn’t imagine it taking place in a better home. And so, we are delighted to continue Dorian’s legacy; producing Shakespeare on the grounds of his estate (in his old riding hall no less!)

This is just the beginning.

We seek new friends, and stranger companies…

Whether you’re 8 or 108, join us this August as audience, participant, helping hand or moral support!

Community Announcement: The Theatre’s Ongoing Transition

Over the past two years, the theatre has been undergoing a deliberate transition to secure its long-term future as a community asset.

When ownership of the building changed hands, David Evans MBE made the decision to acquire it directly rather than place it on the open market, where alternative uses would likely have brought its life as a theatre to an end. That decision was taken with the specific purpose of ensuring the building remained available for performance, participation, and community use.

It has been almost two years since the organisation has been run under the DEMBE Theatre banner, where David has continued to invest personally in its facilities and infrastructure, and the building has remained filled with talented creatives and engaged audiences. Focus has remained on availability, participation and public benefit; a community space for all to enjoy.

To ensure that this community-first approach is maintained into the future, David has encouraged, and is supporting, the creation of an independent charity that will assume full responsibility and ownership of the theatre. This step is intended to place the theatre’s future firmly in the hands of a charitable body with clear governance, transparency, and accountability to the community it serves.

Throughout this transitional period, Liz Raba has demonstrated her understanding of and dedication to the theatre’s values and its role within the community. Through close collaboration, a shared approach has developed, and this alignment makes her the natural choice to lead the theatre forward; with a renewed focus on outreach, education, and embedding the theatre more deeply within community life.

We hope you will look forward to being part of this next chapter — attending, participating, and helping to shape the theatre’s future as a vibrant and welcoming resource for everyone.
