Cabaret Voltaire.

Cabaret Voltaire. Cultural events: mostly music, but sometimes poetry and other things Welcome! Willkommen! Bienvenue! By day we paint pictures, teach children and build walls.

But by night our records jostle uncontrollably for attention, knowing that soon they will be spinning in a tent, forest or club. Arms flaying and hips swaying; bodies sweaty, dancefloor heavy. Musicians, artists and philosophers - come! Leave your troubles at the door, hear the call and enter the Cabaret Voltaire...

Everyone seemed to be out last night for This is the Kit’s sellout show in Totnes, old friends and new. Seamus Fogarty opened.

It was a lovely evening.

I implore lovers of music and beautiful views to watch them at the Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis tomorrow evening.

Thanks to all the band, Seamus, Will, Andy, Bee, Ben, Rowlie, Sofia, Jess, Alana, Alice, and Alex.

Afro-futurism in Devon anyone?

Announcing a new concert for Ibibio Sound Machine: fronted by British-Nigerian frontwoman Eno Williams, they blend West African rhythms, disco, post-punk and global club energy into an explosive live sound.

“Western pop fans will hear echoes of Michael Jackson, James Brown… African music devotees will recognise threads of juju and Afrobeat… a groove-driven melange.”

Romeo Stodart of the Magic Numbers is playing in Totnes next month; you might have seen the interview with him in the charming Barrel House What’s On guide.

Romeo is playing some of the band’s songs amongst others. They have some really evocative tunes from their five albums including the million selling debut that was also nominated for the Mercury Prize.

Joining the bill is the darkly enigmatic Ren Harvieu. She had a top five album, but more recently Ren released on Bella Union, which is a very cool label.

I compel you to attend this intimate concert.

Yes! Yann Tiersen is playing in Totnes on 18 September.

This week, I’ve been organising a grand piano for the French pianist, film composer, and electronic artist, who’s playing material from his new album.
Alice Boyd, who played at the proms last night, is opening. She makes field recordings of nature and mixes it in with music and singing in a cool way.

Early Bird tickets end this weekend, so don’t faff.

Psst...next week William Tyler is playing at the Barrel House in Totnes.

The cultish Nashville guitarist is over from America for the excellent End of the Road festival. I am pleased the warm up is in Totnes.

Previously of Lambchop and Silver Jews, William made a fascinating album last year with Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet (aside: who else saw his secret set at WeOutHere?!).

I’m also chuffed that cool guy S.A. Hampshire is opening the show. Previously of Hearing Aid Beige, I think fans of Chris Cohen, Mild High Club, and Brian Wilson will enjoy hearing him.

Only 50 tickets left for This is the Kit in Totnes next week; a late Summer gathering as we enter the season of concerts again.

Seamus Fogarty opens, which is indeed an extra joy.

I’m just back from We Out Here Festival and what a way to start it all up again!

This is an official Martin appreciation post! My own personal Aslan, he’s the avuncular figurehead of Narnia Totnes - the ticket, record, and merch shop on Fore Street. He’s got an avuncular, calming presence and loves telling me about records, but is indifferent to his bestseller ‘Rumours’ (and also admin). Martin’s always supported Cabaret Voltaire, eagerly selling tickets for all the Totnes gigs, displaying the jaunty posters, and never ever caring that I have only bought two records there.

Go in and say hallo Martin.

Memorials play next month at the Barrel House in Totnes.

They sound simultaneously killer brand new but with psychey 60s swishes swirling in. Memorials opened for Stereolab on their tour, which is cool!
Tickets from the website or Narnia Totnes.

Strut it out!

Delightful faces in Totnes and Ashburton on a massive postering session - Alana, Ben, Rowlie, Toby, Green, Mark et al… bumping into pals walking around but meeting new folks too.

Thank ye Fretwork, North Street Books, Radek’s, Barrel House, Field System, and many other nice places who display the posters.
