South Devon Choir

South Devon Choir South Devon Choir welcomes singers of all ages and abilities to learn and perform some of the world's greatest choral works and some lighter pieces too.

South Devon Choir is a large, non-audition, mixed voice choir. We rehearse on Thursday nights starting back at 7.30pm on Thursday 9 September 2021 at Central Church, Tor Hill Road, Torquay - PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE

Over the years the Choir has sung with many leading amateur and professional orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestras, the Bristol Symphony,

the Bands of HM Grenadier Guards, Household Cavalry and Royal Marine Commandos, Lympstone. Nearly all the historical oratorios, cantatas and choral works have been performed at concerts as well as 20th century compositions. The Choir has visited France four times including the Quimper Music Festival, has hosted choirs from Holland, France and the USA and created links with societies in Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire and North Yorkshire. It has actively encouraged local school choirs to participate in works which include parts written specially for young people. The choir is accompanied for special concerts by professional soloists and the Festival Orchestra, engaged by the Choir using professional instrumentalists and music teachers, which we like to achieve at least once each year or more if possible. 1000 singers and the full orchestra for a Come and Sing ‘Carmina Burana’! What a glorious day that must have been! So jealous! Singers from all over the Uk and beyond. How about an SDC group trip up to Glasgow for next year’s Come and Sing?? Don’t say I didn’t suggest it 🤣

Where would this stunning light show be without music? Everyone knew this choral piece but could they name it? Could you sing it? Yes you could if you joined a choir. We’ve sung it in the past and might in the future. Comment if you know the piece and tell us what it is. And if you want to sing in South Devon then drop us a DM.

Raise your antibodies, come and sing with us

Your voice holds power far beyond words.

According to a fascinating study, singing for just one hour can increase your body’s production of secretory immunoglobulin A, or SIgA, by up to 240 percent. SIgA is your immune system’s first line of defense. It coats the lining of your mouth, throat, lungs, and digestive system, blocking viruses and bacteria before they invade deeper.

Researchers compared people who sang to those who simply listened to music or sat quietly. The difference was clear. Singing led to a massive spike in immunity, while the other activities offered only minor changes.

The act of singing is not just emotional. It is physical medicine. Breath control strengthens the lungs. Muscle engagement improves circulation. Vocal vibration stimulates healing in the chest, face, and brain.

Even more impressive? Singing activates the vagus nerve. This nerve calms the body, regulates stress, lowers cortisol, and balances your immune system. It is the body’s natural switch between fight mode and healing mode.

This is not about singing well. It is about singing fully. Whether it is gospel in a choir, humming in the kitchen, or belting a pop song in the car, your immune system listens and responds.

Singing also boosts endorphins, creating a natural high that relaxes the mind and energizes the body. In a world overwhelmed by stress, that shift can be the medicine many people never realized they needed.

So sing like your health depends on it. Because science says it just might.

Your voice is more than expression. It is immunity in motion.

Music changes the brain in surprising ways. New research shows that people who listen to music regularly have a 39 percent lower risk of developing dementia later in life.

This isn’t about learning instruments or becoming a singer. Just enjoying music daily is enough to light up the brain. From rhythm and melody to emotion and memory, music activates different regions that keep the brain connected and alert.

Researchers believe this stimulation helps protect neurons from age-related decline. It keeps mental circuits active, which may delay or even prevent cognitive disorders. Music also lowers stress hormones, boosts mood, improves sleep, and enhances emotional regulation. All these effects play a role in preserving memory and focus.

Older adults who listen to music from their past show better recall and more stable mood patterns. Even passive listening during daily tasks adds up. Playing songs while cleaning, working, or relaxing trains the brain without any effort.

Making music part of your routine could be one of the easiest brain-supporting habits you start today. No pills, no programs, just sound and rhythm doing silent work in the background.

Let your playlist become your therapy. Your future mind will thank you.
