I took this photo a couple of years back while visiting The Cavern Club in Liverpool. Not an easy image to work with but Rapid RAW did a reasonable job I feel. I used a dynamic B&W preset with basic adjustments and object masking with local adjustments on the faces. Nice and simple edits.

Continuing my thoughts on Rapid RAW, a free open source photo editor. So far I've mentioned only the plus points, and there are a lot of them TBH. However, today I hit a problem when trying to add a mask. The first instance worked perfectly, this was a depth mask and although I could create a second instance, in this case a brush, I simply couldn't get it to apply the mask. Maybe me, but as I have created multiple masks in Rapid RAW previously, I was a little frustrated. Noise reduction does work, just, as does sharpening but not to the extent I'm used to in other software. Disapointed? No, not really. These are really early days for Rapid RAW and the developer is amazingly proactive so I suspect that improvements will be forthcoming soon. Good job so far 👍

Bu**er, she's seen me 😂. A second photo edited in Rapid RAW using a mono preset, lens correction and masking. I've gotta say, I'm very impressed with this free open source editor.

Inspired by a friend of mine, Mark Adams over at One Camera One Lens, I thought I'd try out Rapid RAW, a new Open Source photo editing tool by Timon Kach. The version I am using is 1.6.5 which is the latest version. In all honesty I didn't expect much from such an immature program but I was blown away by how good this tool is. Global editing, masking and local editing, community presets, cropping, transforms, optics and camera settings and an excellent export tool, all working perfectly. It even offers noise reduction but I haven't yet tried this yet. It's an absolute doddle to use if you are familiar with any type of photo editing software but I am guessing that even for those with limited post-processing experience, it won't be overly daunting. In fact, for many of the photographers I know, I suspect that this will the perfect editing tool. Best of all, it's 100% free. Yep, you read that right, zilch, nada, rien, free!
