Ian Cox Artistry

Ian Cox Artistry I am an artist/printmaker based in South Devon. PLEASE NOTE - you'll get more from my other page - I can't even remember why I had to set up this one!

Here's the link - send me a friend request when you get there... www.facebook.com/ianrcox Visiting my studio - my aim is to be in the studio during weekday afternoons, and at weekends, when possible - so there's a good chance you'll find me there if you turn up on spec. But to be on the safe side, please message me to let me know roughly when you'll be visiting and I'll let you know if it's a good time! I live very nearby, so if the studio isn't open when you arrive just message me!

English Riviera Open Studios is a happening thing from this Saturday (6th June)! Twenty artists are taking part - so it's a great way to check out some of the excellent art here in the Bay.

I've copied my catalogue page here so you can plan your visit, and there is also a very good website which includes a virtual version of the full catalogue. I'll put the website address in the comments below, but you can find it by searching for 'Torbay Guild of Artists'

If you are able to visit, please contact me ahead of time as there's barely enough room in my studio to swing a printing press, so I need to manage the visitor numbers a bit... 😆

I’m exhibiting at Printfest again this year with a completely new body of work comprising mezzotints, monotypes and (if I finish it on time) the largest linoprint I’ve ever made!

You’ll find me in the company of over 40 of the UK’s finest printmakers on Sat 3rd to Sun 4th May!

‘North Moor’ - monotype - 36x28cm - 1/1. Apart from the fact that I can only create an edition of 1 using the techniques employed to make this print, the process produces some surprising results and can lead in unexpected directions… if I go with the flow during the making, it occasionally feels like the universe is joining in (which would be even better if the universe helped with the clean-up afterwards…) 🤓

This is the first lino project I’ve been involved with in about a year… so of course it had to be the largest print I’ve ever attempted… and of course ive set myself an almost impossible deadline… it’s even required the making of project-specific paper-handling tools and it involves unfamiliar (to me) inking methods… and a heck of a lot of ink, most of which appears to no longer be on the market… because why do easy? 😜😆

Monoprint - approx 30x20cm - produced during a few hours of experimentation with oil-based ink and a matrix made with tissue paper… printed onto newsprint (because I wasn’t expecting such a good image to appear 😜)

In what now feels like an alternative universe, I was a contestant in the Sky Arts programme, Landscape Artist of the Year.

It was, as you might imagine, quite a stressful experience, but it was also fascinating and technically rewarding and the team at Sky Arts were very professional and encouraging.

Watch Series 10, Episode 3 - to be first aired on Sky Arts on Wednesday, 5th February, 2025 - it’ll also be available to stream, like, forever 😳

Enjoy… 😊

Please consider yourself invited to our end-of-show Private View (with wine) on Friday 7th February 2025 - 6:30-8:00 - at the Artizan Collective Gallery on Fleet Street, Torquay!

The Studio Artists exhibition features my charcoal drawings, mezzotints and linoprints and work by Olya Baklan (watercolourist), Cheryll Kinsley Potter (painter), and Hannah Taylor (ceramicist).

In addition to the exhibited work, we will be showing our 2025 work in progress - and almost all the work on show will be discounted between 15%-50%

If you’re reading this, you’re on the guest list!

Three little (about 7x12cm) drawings of pebbles that I might use to create a series of small mezzotint prints… I’ll do a few more drawings before I decide… if I’m happy with them and finish them in time they’ll be the subject of the printmaking demonstration I’ll be giving at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in the afternoon of 21st November (courtesy of my friends at Ironbridge Fine Arts who have a stand at the show)… I’ll post more on this as the story unfolds 🤓😊
