This is an intensely personal piece. A lot of my recent work is based on an experience that I went through 30 years ago. I have not approached the subject in quite a headlong way as I have in this piece.
The letter is an extract from an actual letter written to me at the beginning of what turned into a 4 year campaign. As a result of what happened the law in the country was changed to protect people like me. The folded shirt represents the ordered and the conventional, that often hides the truth.

I’m hugely proud that this piece is now in exhibition ‘Material World’ at Bankside, London opening this evening.
“This was written for you and about you and has no other reason for its existence, but you and it expresses well enough the feelings in me which you have evoked. As you refuse to discuss this peculiar affair with me I have no idea, beyond what I have perceived from your behaviour, what thoughts have been in your mind and what interpretation you have put on my evident interest in you. Until it is shown to me that our relationship is other than I perceive, I have no cause to believe that my concern for your feelings and welfare does not continue to be justified. You might find it hard to believe
but this brief interlude, while being enchanted by your presence, has brought to my life a happiness which I have not previously experienced. I do not think my endeavours to hold onto this blessing are anything to be ashamed of, however misguided and uncertain my attempts to avoid my being deprived of it. To have your friendship and an occasional meeting would bring my life a great happiness.”
